Ammoengine as mentioned above is good for comparison shopping. Also try here:

You want ammo with full metal jacket bullets, other than that, no nothing I'd say to avoid in particular. Some ranges don't like steel cased ammo though

If it was my glock, no, I would not use those "swaged with certified 6/2 lead alloy ... unique dry-lube formula " bullets. Precisionbullets.com appears to be only selling bullets, not complete rounds of ammunition. Are you envisioning using those bullets for reloading?

($.42/round for WWB from Able Ammo) - 42 cents a round for Winchester White Box is definitely on the expensive side. I'd look elsewhere.

($.25/round for wolf from cheaperthandirt.com) - That will be ok target ammo (can't use it at the bullet hole), but I wouldn't rely on Wolf for anything else (ex: self defense). I've picked up many rounds of Wolf off the floor at IDPA matches with a strongly dented primer that did not fire.

I would buy what you're going to shoot there and wait for a gunshow in the area.

I was just at the Allentown show this weekend and got a 1k brick of 40S&W brass cased FMJ cheap.

I was there too and picked up a 1k brick of 45auto...great prices from those guys in the back!

For the cheap stuff, buy just that - whatever is cheapest. It's a Glock.. it'll eat just about anything.

For HD - that's largely personal preference.. everyone has an opinion on what's best. But, realistically, any modern hollow point should be ok. The Critical Defense line by Hornady is supposedly designed with the civilian self defense shooter in mind (i.e. it's not necessarily designed to shoot thru glass but is designed to shoot thru multiple layers of heavy clothing without clogging). Hornady also makes a TAP line that most people seem to like. Speer Gold Dots are pretty popular with police departments. Corbon DPX has a pretty good reputation. Then there's the EFMJ rounds that act like a hollow point without being a hollow point. Confused yet? :)

All that said, If I were you, I'd try to pick up more than 1 box of the cheap stuff :) Practice makes perfect, and you can't really practice much with a box of 50

... arent hollow point illegal in new jersey?

NO!

http://www.state.nj.us/njsp/about/fire_hollow.html

Provided certain conditions are met, a sportsman may transport and use hollow point ammunition. There are no restrictions preventing a sportsman from keeping such ammunition at his home....

cool! i didnt know that... whats a good home defense round?

The best home defense round is the one that is loaded in the gun when all the other ammo is under the bed...

00 buckshot is good for shotguns as are slugs

Jacketed Hollow Points for Pistols, there are many flavors. Personally I like the Corbon DPX, they're 100% copper.
