but.. the only thing you have to be aware of.. is that it is really hard to make completely clear ice

I was thinking the same, i think the only way to do it at home would be to use distilled water, and boil it first to get the oxygen out.. I bought some skull n crossbones ones for my son (pirate obsession) and it was a pain in the butt

You can buy de-ionized water that will make nice clear ice if you're doing it for a party or something.

My wife gave me one of the ice cube trays for Christmas. The back of the case has a tendency to shear off coming out of the mold where the case is more narrow. It's pretty cool though and always gets a second look when someone sees it.

have you tried coloring the water before freezing ? maybe green or red..
