AK-200 rifle: The 21st Century AK

Recommended Posts

I guess it's a derivative of the AK-74. 60 round mag would be awfully tasty.

The next generation AK has finally been given a name: AK-200. Last year I posted photos of the prototype. It featured a 60 round magazine, folding stock, plenty of picatinny rails and a bipod/handguard.

The final model retains the rails and 60 round magazine but now uses what appears to be a folding skeleton-style stock and newly designed birdcage-style flash hider.

Got this from a fellow Airsofter who is Russian and follows this stuff pretty close:

None of those photos are of an "AK200"

Those are photos of current Izmesh products. Including tactical parts for mounting Western doo-dads.

AK201 is a 5.56 modernized RPK. AK203 is a 7.62x39 modernized RPK. Both are predominately for export.

Though the confusing nomenclature could be due to politicians vs. designers. Politicians come waltzing in and making grand statements that are incongruent with current production.

I will look at some russian newspapers to see.

but look, lets be honest.

It is an AK. You can dress up a pig any way, it is still bacon.

It will be ultra reliable. The modifications, sure, bigger mag, new rail, new flash hider, maybe a nicer barrel.

Again more info - it seems like this newspost is misinformed.

This is what the new AK protypes that are potentially "AK200"

And they are superficial improvements. Internally its the same beast. With more ways to attach toys. And modified dust cover closing and modified sight adjustment.

Redesigned pistol grip, and the latch on the dust cover seems more like the SVD kind. And obviously the addition of rails.

Looks like the dust cover is not hinged to the sight block like the AKS74U which has been like 30 years now. The sight leaf is now recessed into the sight block, so its less likely to snag on stuff. And its adjusted by using a dial on the side, instead of a slider on the actual leaf.

There's a slot to feed a strap for a recoil pad when using a grenade launcher, and looks like the cleaning rod is now in the stock. Otherwise, looks like the same folding polymer stock design seen since the early 90s.

The muzzle break looks the same as it did since 1974. If it is different, its probably slight differences, like on the Romanian 5.45.

And this is old news. Nothing to get worked up about. Everyone was excited to see the AK107 and AN94 and AEK197 which actually have functional internal differences to the traditional AK. And nothing but limited field use for trials was done.
