Shotgun Barrel Question

I am going to start deer hunting next year.

Currently I have a 28inch barrel on my 870 with a threaded choke tube (modified).

 

I am wondering what my best option for a barrel is?

-Should I just get a cylinder choke and shoot slugs with my current barrel?

-If I do go that rout is 28inch going to be too long for hunting?

-If I do decide to buy a rifled barrel what length do you recommend?

Depends on where you're hunting. If it's thick brush get a full choke and shoot some quality buckshot. If it's barren, get yourself a rifled barrel and shoot some quality sabot slugs.

try sighting in at all choke settings - most recommend the more open chokes , but i have found full choke more accurate w/some slugs - i have never had a problem with long barrels in any deer hunting situation - good sights more important than degree of choke in my opinion -

I preffer a slug barrel when shooting slugs.. i use a 24 inch barrel on my mossberg 500..

 

you need to figure out where you are going hunting and decide which will be better for your application, slugs or buck shot..

the box of truth showed surprising results shooting rifled slugs out a smooth bore barrel. Sabot slugs in a rifled barrel are the best performing tho...

Don't forget if you plan to hunt in NJ with Slugs you are required to have some form of adjustable sights on your shotgun whether it be irons or a scope.

Tony is right.... plain barrel and use slugs. I would'nt use rifled slugs in a rifled barrel.

That's for a plain deer gun.
