Transporting A Firearm In Nj

Recommended Posts

It's a long gun, not the same rules as a hand gun, but if your not going directly to and from the range it is a good Idea to have your FID with you.

If you have a long gun outside of the exemptions, you are required to have a Firearms Purchaser ID. This does not necessarily mean you must have it on you, but a cop on the side of the road isn't going to know if you have one or not and you will be arrested and charged with having long guns without first having obtained a firearms purchaser ID. You go before a judge, produce the card, that charge drops, but they may get you on something else because that's what they like to do. It's in their nature, much like the Scorpion and the frog.

You can avoid that little trip into the legal system by carrying your firearms purchaser ID with you at all times when you have long guns present. By doing so, you are breaking no laws by stopping at the bank, the mall or whatever, as long as the gun is properly handled and stored.

Hmmm. You are right. I always assumed that you needed to have it with you. Good catch.

I could have used a different word, but for me, I always have it on me anyway when transporting a firearm as well as COE's for that oh I have the long gun for sale. :icon_mrgreen:

My card is in my wallet. My wallet is always where I'm at, so by default, if I have a gun with me I have my purchaser ID. I'm also of the opinion that less informed LEOs believe that the Firearms PURCHASER ID is a firearms OWNERSHIP ID and that any gun, hand or long, requires the owner have the card on their person. I could be wrong in that perception but it is no effort for me to carry my FPID so I would always be able to produce it if requested therefore possibly avoiding further complications.

My old FID had some statute about being able to carry rifles and shotguns but my new FID doesn't have that line. Is it not allowed anymore or are there provisions on that "carry" statement?

if you are careful you can get it JUST small enough to fit.. mine was trimmed then laminated..

I just recently received my replacement FID and the folks at my local KINKOS was kind enough to trim, laminate and trim again so that it's now barely larger than my driver's license and with me at all times.

It's the same card, they just changed the wording some time back. It probably made some people think they could carry handguns with it.

Way up there Vlad made (one of many) an excellent point. If you are concerned about loaded mags you should be worried about transporting AK variants. If I were you I would remove the pistol grip before going to the range. LOLOLOLOLOL.

Anyway this thread is ending nicely - how to trim a wallet card. I didn't know you could do that. Is it legal to trim a government doc, eg FID card? More LOLOLOLOL. Beware!! The man is after you. Yes, Massuh.

sometimes I feel that law abiding gun owners allow unjust guilt to drive them to do things beyond that which the law demands..

no reason to worry about laws that are not there....

While not directly related to this thread.....many people do the same thing with FOPA. FOPA says nothing about "ammo separate" but many say it that way anyway.

I was just thinking today... what about transport on foot? I live within walking distance of a shooting range. It's easier to drive there, but on a nice summer day maybe I'd like to get some exercise by walking there. All the NJ laws I see quoted here are about transporting in automobiles. How do I transport a firearm on foot?

Same as a motor bike or SUV/Pickup I would suppose. Firearms unloaded, carried discreetly in a suitable case and ammo in the same or seperate case. I would lock either the gun case or the firearms themselves as I do when transporting in my wagon or SUV. Yes, I load all of my mags and speedloaders.
