hello everyone, me and my girlfriend been talking about going to try to go skeet shooting. been trying and wanting to go for a while now but doesn't have time. her uncle and cousins went and been coming back, i guess that motivated her to finally find time and go. we finally made it last night. we got there at 730pm went straight to the office, we told the 2 guys in the counter that it was our first time there and we would like to try and shoot skeet. guys were nice let us know how things work, box of ammo 12 gauge $9 and 25 skeet target for $9. a person guides you to the area where you will shoot. tells you how it works a and show you how to aim and showed us first that the target will fly and you aim and shoot. shot gun by the way is not rented they just let you use it for free. Pete is our guide instructor, gives us tips, nice and friendly. lets me shoot 1 shot, then gave pointers, then shoot 4, then my girlfriends turn, shoot 1, then 4, then my turn to shoot 10 and her turn to shoot 10 and so on. me and my girlfriend had a great experience, we will definitely be back. (if you guys go bring cash or check.) i love it and my girlfriend loved it, we stayed a little bit to watch and my girlfriend said before we even leave "when are we coming back" and i said you liked it huh hehehe! hope you guys try it if you have not shoot skeet yet very nice experience. check out there website: www..thundermt.com

Its a good place to learn the clay shooting sports. You always have a "puller" escorting you around the grounds and they are more then willing to give you an impromptu lesson or tips. Just make sure you tip them at the end of the day.

I was up there for the first time a little over a month ago. Nice place. Definitely a hassle-free intro to skeet and trap shooting. They provide all the stuff and you just shoot.

I'm thinking of getting a 28" barrel for my Mossberg 500 so I can use it up there. Anyone able to tell me what kind of choke I would need?

Get a skeet choke for skeet.

Sorry, couldn't help myself. :)

They have a skeet or is it a trap choke for the 500. I bought one years ago for like under 10. My son has a 20gauge 500 and I need to pick up a skeet / trap choke for his as well. Also looking at getting him a 26" barrel for this shotgun.

Went this past Sunday for the first time with a friend so he could break in his new 850. Had a blast and everyone there was so friendly. Great service and our guide was extremely knowledgeable nd she was always willing to give us pointers. Will probably pick up a n 850 for myself in the near future. Definitely will be going a few times a month hopefully. And yes, bring cash because the only fees they charge are pretty much ammo and materials so definitely tip your field staff.

Sorry for any spelling and grammar errors in advance. My phone isnt cooperating with my attempts to scroll through and check content.

hello everyone, me and my girlfriend been talking about going to try to go skeet shooting.

Grammar is under-rated, if you find this offensive - oh well.

Your post should start "My girlfriend and I". You put the other person first in the sentence, this shows, a) respect (I hope you respect your girlfriend - maybe you don't) and b) proper English.

Secondly, would you say "me have been talking about going to..." No, you would say "I have been talking".

It's really not hard. But it's ok, I understand, it takes too much time to learn a few rules about the English language.

Then you have this gem "...been talking about going to try to go..." WTF? Did a wretch from Oliver Twist take over your keyboard? Let's just break down for a moment what you wrote: "been talking" - you have discussed in the past. "about going" = indicates that you intend to go. "to try to go..." = indicates that you might try to go. So are you going or are you trying? Which is it? I suppose from what you wrote you are trying to do both (or maybe it's BOFE?).

Then there's the fact that you can't seem to find the shift key, though I guess you should get an "Honorable Mention" for proper use of the period key.

Yeah - sarcasm.

Other than that, congratulations on a great time at Thunder Mountain. If you would like to shoot trap, and have your own shotgun, you can do much better on the pricing than what Thunder Mountain offers.

Thunder Mountain was the first successfully sponsored Winchester-franchise to open in the United States in 1962. Winchester opened many more ranges throughout the U.S. afterwards, but Thunder Mountain was their first. It really hasn't changed much since 1962. My dad took me there to hone my beginner shotgun skills in the 60's, and I began shooting there in leagues in 1970. It still looks the same to me except for some updates to the clubhouse.

djg0770, ur lyk sheldon from the big bang theory, hahaha. thank u for ur tym and english 101.

I am not "like" Sheldon (we capitalize proper names) at all. He was modeled after me.

I know, you never figured Sheldon to be a gun lover, but stranger things have happened.

Thunder Mountain is certainly the best public clay facility around NNJ. Only issue is the prices sky rocketing over the past few years, but throwing lead around NJ has to be a pricey proposition. Ruth knows more about breaking a clay bird than any person I ever met. If she can't help your game, I suggest you take up tennis instead.

Tip the pullers....they aren't getting rich on the wages, I assure you.

PS~ Bruce offers a fair FFL transfer, too.

You are right, it is a great place, only has gotten expensive over the last few years. So too, has everything else, so it's expected. I'm not familiar with Bruce. Rob is Ruth's son, and is usually the fixture behind the counter there. Great guy to deal with and knows his stuff.

Just went back there Saturday to shoot a couple of rounds of trap. That is indeed a great place for a novice to gain some familiarity with the sport. I guess it is a bit expensive, but someone with little experience (like me) can feel quite comfortable there.

On a sad note, I was saddened to learn that Ruth died a couple of months ago. I was surprised that she was not behind the counter, and when I asked about her, I was given the bad news. I hope her widower and surviving family continue to run the place.
