VEPR in 54R and 16.5"

I have been out of AK variants for 2+ years since I went to the AR side..

 

I am looking at the VEPR in 54R and 16.5" barrel for a starting setup..

 

 

SGM is now selling 10 round mags ($43 each) for it.. and csspecs is working on some other sizes..

 

What says the crowd?? anyone have one of the newer ones in 54R flavor..??

i don't own one but i've heard all good things about the VEPR rifles. with it being a 54r i think you might want to look into the bullet weights that can be used - i read somewhere that the AK receivers chambered in 54r are fine up to a certain weight, but after that the pressures get to high (it might have been like 155gr not sure though). so the romak 3s and the veprs chambered in 54r would be affected by that... but for example a REAL svd/dragonov would not.

I've always wanted a 7.62x54R carbine and my ideal would be a Waffen Werks AK54R.

 

The thing I don't like about the VEPR is that they use single stack mags, although 10 rounders are now available.

Ive heard great things about the VEPR, and Ive been looking at the 23 inch barrel version in 54r...thinking ill wait until they come down a bit...

Suggested by some to go with the 20" version as the 16.5" may not burn enough powder..

The 16.5" is a flame thrower alright. You may care or you may not.

Always had a hardon for the waffen AK-54r.

 

Those things are LOUD and breathe fire.

 

I love it! This isnt too far off, with a brake it will be just as good of an attention getter, lol

 

But, with the waffen you get a rifle that can take all standard AK furniture which is a big plus. And the brake.

 

Dont worry about getting the longer barrel, you wont be shooting this at beyond 600 yards will you?

Got ansy and just ordered the 20" flavor Ver 01.. $817 shipped to my FFL.. Dealer confirmed they have the models with threading under the cap..

There models with the front sight on the gas block. These seem to be more rare and/or desirable as they are harder to find.

The downside I noticed on them is the 7 3/4" long gastube.. which is no where near the standard AK at 6 7/8".. another reason I went without the Ver 02 and stuck wih the Ver 01 model.. I'd prefer to buy another normal gas tube if need be and also for options on handguards down the line..

For me a 20.5" barrel will have 2+ full twists for the round.. 16.5" will only get 1 3/4 or so..

Comes up at like 8 1/2 lbs on a BR scale..

 

Keep in mind this is the 20.5" model of the 54R.. not the slightly lighter 762x39 or 545x39 one..

I just snapped up one of the 20 inch 5.45 from them at 499. Cant wait to get it. Will post back when i get to make noise with it. Hope the wife doesn't beat me with it in my sleep.
