Need AR sight recommendations

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm still kinda broke, but I was broke when I started looking at different components of my AR also, so I just figured I'd see what's out there.

I don't care much for the old front-sight post on ARs, so I basically just have a railed gasblock, with a rail running down the length of the upper receiver/ rail system.

I'm not sure if different sights are better for longer rifles than shorter ones, so any advice on that would be appreciated, but to be honest, the M14's front sights are my favorite, and that's sort of what I'd like to get, the flared barleycorn sights they have, but I'm not sure if they make those for mounting on AR rails.

As for rear sights, I prefer peep-sights, though I'm not sure if there are better alternatives or not.

So basically what I'm asking for is some education on...

1) Are there M14 style front sights for ARs?

2)Is it indeed best to have sights situated as far apart as possible, and if not, what should I know about putting them on?

3) What is the best type of rear sight?

Any other pertinent information would be appreciated as well. I really don't have the cash for reflex sights or anything at the moment, and I'd like to have irons anyway, since I love shooting with ironsights, and I don't have to worry about keeping them powered if something happens.

Cheapest sight would be magpul mbus which I have and are great but not really what your looking for

I'm keeping a bit of an openmind. Even if it's not what I'm looking for, having SOME sight is better than none.

My opinion is that the longest sight radius you can get is what you want. If you can mount your front sight on the gas block or even in front of it (for example my gas block is under my long handguard and my front sight is mounted in front of that). If you can, don't mount sights on handguards, they can move, some are better then others but avoid it.

Don't mount magpul sights on the gas block, Magpul recommends against it, and you sure as heck don't want plastic on a bit of metal that gets hot. Also they will be the wrong height. For rail block mounted sights I have one of the these on one of my guns and I like it but you can also use a fixed front sight like this one.

For rear, the magpul is not bad for the price but it is not a precision rear sight. Its good enough to 200 yards practical accuracy but it has a bit to much play if you want to shoot groups.

What height is your gas block?

http://yhm.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_3&products_id=12

Thats a decent priced flip up for gas blocks height. I have the MI that Vlad showed you with the Magpul back sight. Works ok for me. But I think your AR is more for accuracy if I can remember right.

Vlad, I don't know if that fixed front sight will work with a block.

I actually had bought a scope for it, but it was previously mounted on a carry handle, and I couldn't zero it to save my life. I've decided I should stay away from scopes for now, I didn't know much about them, and I end up doing everything wrong XD.

Honestly its hard for me to tell on that picture. As long as your gas block is lower than the rail on your gun, then you specifically need to get a "gas block height" front sight. It will need to state it.

The fixed will not work with that.

My scope gave me fits at first haha. The most important thing is to make sure all the screws are tightend and the mounts are level.

Gasblock is level with the rail.

I really never knew if there was an appreciable difference in iron sights or not, is there anything I should know?

i looked thru the wts forum on ar15 and after a couple weeks got a lightly used set of troy folding sights for $100 shipped. from reviews they seemed to be good quality and the set for sale was what i was looking for (dioptic rear and hk style front). i can tell you they are super solid and have held zero thru about 300 rds.

Ok then you DONT need anything that says "gas block height" That fixed sight would be fine. Just want to get something quality. Don't want any rattle or coming loose. That would obviously throw your sight out of zero

How do you go about zeroing an ironsight? I didn't know that they had to be zeroed, I figured that was just for scopes. I guess it has to do with windage, and elevation adjustments?

      Hello Gents,

I'm selling my (like new) AR mid length complete upper receiver chambered in 300BLKOUT 7.62 × 35mm manufactured by Special Ops Tactical.  Only put approximately 100 rounds through it. For those of you who don't know, this basically will fit on most AR lowers and uses the same AR magazines but gives you a .30 caliber (7.62 x 35) by just swapping the upper receiver if you are looking for a heavier load and more knock down power for hunting etc. (obviously state laws apply). I'm only selling it because I ended up buying a complete .30 caliber rifle.

      Here are some specs:

300 BLK Out Nitride - 14.5″ Pinned to 16" Overall Midlength Upper
GPX 12.6" MLOK Free Floating Rail System with continuous 1913 Picatinny rail on top
Muzzle Brake Original "Black Magic" 30 Cal (pinned & welded NJ legal).
      {Nitride} M4 Extended Feed Ramps
      Nitride M4 Barrel Extension
      1:7 Twist Rate
      5/8×24 Thread Pitch
      Raptor Charging Handle

      Price: $695

Pm or email me with any questions: [email protected]
      I am in Deptford NJ.
THE FIRST TO POST "I'LL TAKE IT" WINS THE SALE.
A "PM sent" DOES NOT ESTABLISH THE SALE. If you want the item, post "I'll take it" and should the deal fall apart the seller can post "still available." Should you reach a negotiated price via PM then post "I'll take it per our PM(s)"  on this thread.
