chris327 30 Posted December 16, 2012 So I have an extra work bench in my basement. I'm going to user it for cleaning, modding ect firearms. anyone have any good ideas for finishes that I can place the gun right on and it won't scratch or mark it? Was thinking maybe garage epoxy type but not sure if anyone else has ideas.
rightisright 3 Posted December 17, 2012 You could try something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Herculiner-HCL0B8-Brush-Bed-Liner/dp/B0002TDUW4/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_1_2 I prefer to just use a washable gun mat or towel on my stainless bench...
GRIZ 3,369 Posted December 17, 2012 Most gunsmiths I've seen working and repair facilities at manufacturers use some type of mat. I do the same. Doesn't mess up gun or bench and easy to clean.
johnp 45 Posted December 17, 2012 I think bed liner would be to abrasive and scratch up what you are working on. I saw rubber diamond plate at Harbor Freight, I think that would work and look cool and different.
FishNJ 2 Posted December 17, 2012 a nice piece of leather. i have a 12 x 12 piece of 1/4" thick leather that i oiled up and use as my cleaning mat. would love to find a 18 x 24" piece...
chris327 30 Posted December 17, 2012 Yea ive always used a mat but figured to make it a permanent surface since its only for guns. Truck liner will cause scratches.
Josh S 0 Posted December 17, 2012 Is your bench wood? If so I would get a mat wood will soak up any spilled cleaning solvents or what have you then stink to high heaven.

PeteF 1,044 Posted December 17, 2012 Attach a 1/8" sheet of fiberboard to the bench top. When it gets munged up just replace it.
siderman 1,140 Posted December 17, 2012 I've got rolls of dis-carded thin rubber conveyer belts I cut to size for my mats.Of course good ole heavy cardboard works too.
mcbethr 42 Posted December 17, 2012 Use cardboard pizza boxes when your clean your gun. They soak up the oil from your gun and don't mar the finish. Just eat the pizza first.
addicted 0 Posted December 18, 2012 I like rubber mats from McMaster. 1/8" thick Works well and cleans up very easily. I glue them on with contact cement.
ar15bang 0 Posted December 18, 2012 Carpet stores will give away for free the sample pads, they are something like 2.5' x1.5'
