Just curious, when they ask you to put the hammer down, do you do this with an empty barrel? I was curious if you should do this without some sort of snap cap in place to protect the barrel for rimfire.

Yes, on an empty barrel. Inserting an empty mag for guns with mag saftey is ok, but we need to hear the pin drop.

From what I understand, most modern rimfires have " stops" to prevent the hammer from over traveling on empty chamber to prevent damage.

Additionally , I've dropped the hammer on my rimfires hundreds , maybe thousands of times, with no ill effect.

Thanks. I have an AA kit for my Glock. The barrel does not look too happy after I dry fired it to break down the gun. I've only done this a few times so I can't imagine how bad it would look after a few matches.

I suppose I should just get a dedicated 22 handgun. My buddy's Ruger does not have this issue.
