I noticed because my Garand has it and I thought it was a stock repair. On mine it also looks like the right side has a new piece glued on right below the operating rod.

So maybe that is way the rifle seems to fit up tight.

Porthole, They also bedded loose stocks. If yours has a arsenal repair by the op rod. Might have been bedded to tighten lock-up.
