Shot my 1st 45

Recommended Posts

So the other day at the range i decided to try one of the ranges guns. I picked a Sig 45 not sure of the model(new to pistols). But now im obessed with finding/buying a 1911 style. The feel and accuracy were just amazing! I have a Sig 226 and while its a great gun it doesnt feel at home in my hand.

Surprised you don't like the 226. Do you have small hands? You may just like the fact that .45acp has more of a push back as opposed to a snappy recoil. Is your 226 .40 or 9mm?

The first handgun that I ever owned was a 1911.

How much do you want to spend - it makes a big difference...

I have these 1911: Sig Tacops; Kimber Team Matcg II, Wilson Tactical Eliete....As they go up in price so does the intrinsic accuracy...The Kimber is a good price/performance point for the serious shooter who dosn't want to go custom...But they are all fine pistols, and there are scores of other 1911 45s to chooze from...You gatta help us norrow it down some..(Seems this post theme comes up almost every week this year ;-))...

All my pistols are 45 (x-1 a 44 mag) - welcome to the Big-Boy's Club ;-)!

Prob about 1500 im not sure bonus check coming next week.... Im just trying to decide what type to buy full size or carry style. Leaning to full for capacity. Im not going to be shooting at meets anytime soon. Just will be a range gun and newest addition to the safe. I really havent looked at many brands and dont want to get into customs. I think ill prob stay with Sig but they do have many styes too. Dam powerball better hit soon so i can buy one of each.

if it is a range gun - get the full size - the added accuracy with the 5 " barrel will make you happy. You can get a kimber for 1500. I am very happy with my Kimber - 700 rounds only one "jam"...Very accurate...The kimber mags stink but that is no biggie - get some wilson/tripp mags andyou are all set...There are other very good 1911s at that price point too.

Since fit and feel is so important to you my advice is to go to a store or range that has a huge selection and check out as many as you can. To me nothing feels more natural in my hands than a 1911, but they are a little more finicky than a full modernized semi auto like a glock or sig. I buy guns partially for astetics and beauty so I can fall in love with a picture and buy, if feel is more important to you the go feel before you buy.

Hagues in Deptford has a bunch of Sig in stock including 1911's. I was just there a few days ago. You can try a few out there first. If you're looking for another brand then I doubt they'll have it there. I don't think I saw one > $1500 but I wasn't looking that closely.

I too own a P226 in 9mm, and while I always thought it felt great in my hands, I fell even more in love with the P220 after firing one... Think of it as a slimmer P226... I have big hands, and the P226 fits fine, but the P220 is actually even better feeling IMO.

As for 1911s, I own the Sig 1911 TTT, and it has been great to me thus far...also a fun gun to shoot.

Either Sig - a P220 or variety of 1911 - should be under $1000 (or were pre-panic), except for maybe a few top-tier models. I was looking at the P220 Elite Dark and pre panic, they were selling for around $950 or so online, despite the MSRP of ~$1200...same for my 1911TTT...

My next Sig is likely going to be a P220, because I really did think it felt more at home in my hands than even the P226...

So i think i will be getting the Sig Nightmare 4 inch barrel

don't get a 4" barrel; get something with a 5 inch barrel - you will be much happier at the range (you said it was a range gun)...Like I mentioned, kimbers are very accurate. I have a sig 1911 and a kimber 1911 andthe kimber 1911 is just a better pistol (accuracy AND reliability).

Surprised that your hand did not fall off. :) Seriously, any full grown healthy male should be able to handle a 9mm, 40 and .45. If you have played football or other contact sport, a hit in those is much worse than even the recoil from a lightweight .44 mag revolver.

I have had a few new shooters tell me that they thought the recoil from a .45 1911 or Sig P220 was less than the 9mm compact carry guns they owned. I like the .45 and have been shooting it for about 42 years. It is the only caliber that I actually used against other humans so I trust it and know what it can do. The recoil is also more of a push straight back and I find it easier to control than a .40 cal.

The 1911 platform has always been a favorite of mine and although I sold off my Officer and full sized 1911's I do carry the Sig P938 and P238 at times and they are similar in certain aspects. I used to carry a Colt Defender and New Agent but they were heavy for their capacity and ammo fussy so I sold them. My full sized 1911 ended up collecting dust in my gun safe so I sold that too. After 42 years of shooting them I am kind of been there done that with the 1911 and yet I still want to buy one again. :)
