If I go to PA and purchase a long gun (rifle) with my photo ID and have them run the NICS, why do I need to show the dealer a NJ FPID card or ask for a COE?  The PA dealer could care less about the NJ FPID card as they sell long guns in PA with a simple drivers license.

Even if I do need my FPID and ask for a COE, I should be able to put the rifle in the trunk and drive home. Correct or incorrect?

A little off topic. But close. My son moved out of state for college and likely will not move back. He moved prior to 18y/o so he never had a NJ FID. Can I deliver his guns to him (they are in my name) in NC and give them to him? This is as far as NJ laws are concerned. I will check NC laws to confirm its legal there. I doubt there is a problem with NC law.

Per federal law you are free to travel with your legally owned firearms from NJ through enemy territory (MD, Wash DC). Once in NC, how you transfer your legally owned firearms are no longer under the jurisdiction of NJ. In NC you are under the jurisdiction of NC and federal law. Want to make it real safe? Find a dealer in NC to do a transfer from you to son. Son gets a NICS to see if he is eligible, all the guns go in the bound book, and you're done.
