Rifle help

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking of getting into long distance shooting for sometime now. When it comes to this I am a complete noob so I need some help on a good bolt action rifle to hook up a nice scope to and just do some fun long distance target shooting. Hard to say price range, I am not looking at in the thousands I can tell you that, but otherwise really not sure on what range I am in. Obviously the cheaper of a good quality gun is always recommended :)

Second the Remington 700.  I recently purchased a 700 SPS in .308 from here and it's great.  Very easy to shoot accurately with it and you will get MOA groups easily.

If you want to go a bit higher quality there is a member here looking to part with a Remington 5r, with or without McRee stock.  If interested pm me and I will get you their contact info.

There was a similar thread just recently by "Topher" .  Because of price and the ease of changing barrels he went with Savage.

Price point?  You'll spend as much on good glass as you will on a rifle.

Caliber?  Do you handload?

Yep 223 and 308 are common calibers if you don't handload.

What's your budget for rifle and scope?

Fixed it!

223/5.56 and 308 make good sense to start with even if you do reload. 300 magnum and 338 Lapua are better long range calibers but if you're punching holes in paper 223/5.56 or 308 have more than adequate power to do that and a lot more.

Almost all long range shooters in the 600-1000 yard range use 308.  It seems to be the best all around caliber.  The others 6mmBR, 300 WM, etc have other factors to weigh.  Most use bolt action.  Considering any competition may steer you to other things you must to into account.  Nobody goes to the range with more "stuff" than a high power shooter. Put an expensive spotting scope on that list, and a possible shooting jacket.

    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. This is GM's updated version. it might be  pump gas 10-1 engine The L88 was a aluminum head  cast iron block engine with a nasty solid lifter cam. the  ZL1 was a all aluminum  12 or 13-1 compression ratio engine with the best forged internal parts at the time and had a even nastier solid lifter cam
    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
    • Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
