ak47 cleaning question

Recommended Posts

If you want to do it right, same as any other rifle.  One piece cleaning rod, jag, cotton patches, Hoppes No. 9, gun oil

Run a few patches hoppes through alternating with dry till most of the black is out, let it sit for a while, run a really wet one through and let it sit, let the stuff dissolve the gunk.  Then a bunch of dry ones and keep repeating till they come out clean.  Then run a few patches of oil through to clean the hoppes out and coat it with oil for storage.

Everyone's got a milion ways to do it, but it doesn't get any simpler than that.

I used to use just a boresnake and CLP, but it is unreal how much crud builds up there if you don't use the cleaning rod and hoppes every once and a while.

What oil do you use to coat the rifle with and put down the barrel? We normally use hoppes 9 on all our other weapons to clean the barrels , gun scrubber for the rest then coat everything but down the barrel with one shot dry lube. We have red and tacky high heat grease we use on the rails as well. We where instructed not to use anything but hopped 9 in the barrel of our guns. So that's why I'm asking.

I made sure to regrease the saiga b4 I fired it yesterday since it was new out of the box. It was already very greasey but I just coated the rails of the bolt and some.of the Internals with red and tacky high heat grease

I use the rod, a bore brush Hoppes 9 rem oil or white lithium grease to lube.

What rod? The one that came with your AK or a different one?

Anyone got a link to a rod I should buy? Keep in mind I do have the steel one must saiga came with.along with the cleaning kit.

Also I have a welded on ak74 break so is there anything I need to do to protect it when running a rod or snake down it. ( as you can tell this is my first rifle and my 2nd firearm I own. I have cleaned.my dads rifles b4 but when you spend your own money you want to do it the right way on your particular firearm. I spent 2 weeks making sure I knew how to clean my m9 and what I needed when I first got it. So sorry if I get too annoying with my questions :p. )

The one that came with the AK. You also got the capsule shaped cleaning kit? Use that.

The saiga barrel is chrome lined, IMO you are not going to scratch it with the cleaning rod.

I use the cleaning kit that came with it and patches.

That's true. Maybe I'll get a snake as well. Use the cleaning rod that came with it for big cleanings and a snake for me being ocd every now and again. Lol.

So rem oil down the barrel after its been cleaned with hoppes9?

I have the Russian jag and brushes.

I was worried about the crown. Anyone else want to weigh in?

The top part of the capsule goes on the crown to prevent the crown from gettign damaged.

I have a welded ak74 brake. Does that change your advice?

So buy a cheap 30cal 12$ rifle cleaning kit and use the aluminum rod. Go to Wally World/order on amazon/go to your local gun store.

Does this changed advice help with your thought process :)
