Kimber45 3 Posted November 23, 2014 Hello all.... would anyone know if there is a gas station near Brancburg that sells K1 kerosene from the pump? I know Lowes and Home Depot sell it for 44 bucks for 5 gals. But I heard it was cheaper ag the pump. Iam close to rte 22 so if there was a station in Branchburg or Whitehouse area that would be great... thanks everyone.... Oh and have a great turkey day........ sof 0 Posted November 23, 2014 If no one helps you out closer, there is one on Rte. 22East out here near Phillipsburg. $5/gallon.
sof 0 Posted November 23, 2014 It's only about 5 minutes out of your way on the way to EFGA and called Eagle Gas. About the 3rd station on the East hand side of the road, maybe 3-4 miles from the exit ramp.
fishnut 2,358 Posted November 23, 2014 Gas station at the corner of Gaston ave and main street Somerville used to sell it about 8 years ago I am assuming they still do. It used to be a Sunoco station I think
mustang69 505 Posted November 23, 2014 Only one local to us Branchburg folks is Van Dorn in Whitehouse - but the price is a ridiculous $6 a gallon...

mustang69 505 Posted November 24, 2014 Yup - Van Dorn is on 22east, west of the Kings shopping center. It's across from the diner. Was there Friday getting 5 gals for the garage heater and about choked on the price. Be sure to bring a Blue kero can - they won't pump it into any other container. Hooligan 0 Posted November 25, 2014 It's almost $6 in Hackettstown. The stuff isn't cheap and it seems like fewer people are buying and selling it anymore.

millsan1 3 Posted November 25, 2014 Can I ask what you are using it for? If it is for one of those torpedo heaters, you can use diesel.
Kimber45 3 Posted November 25, 2014 No its a convection one. Round R2D2 looking one.... I spend a lot of time in the garage tinkering and I just started reloading for my 300 BLK.... and it gets a tad cold in here......I looked at the jet engine ones but they require electric.... figured if the power went out it could do double duty...... millsan1 3 Posted November 25, 2014 Got ya.I can't find Kero out by me and run diesel in my torpedo. My contractor turned me on to that. A lot cheaper and a lot more convenient. GL
mustang69 505 Posted November 25, 2014 How is the smell with diesel? I use Kero in my torpedo heater but I know it will run on diesel. Everything I read says diesel stinks up the place though.
millsan1 3 Posted November 25, 2014 No smell. When it runs out the smoke is crazy, but beyond that nothing of note.
Kimber45 3 Posted November 25, 2014 Thats good to know .... thanks
Hooligan 0 Posted November 26, 2014 Those R2D2-looking heaters are fantastic. Ours kept the house toasty after Sandy. They're very efficient and can be used to boil water and cook in a pinch. One morning I fried bacon and eggs in a pan resting on the top.
djg0770 481 Posted November 26, 2014 At $6 a gallon my back of the napkin calculation indicates that an electric heater is cheaper to run than K-
Kimber45 3 Posted November 26, 2014 Eggs and bacon in the garage????? Awesome I can stuff my face while I stuff bullets.....lol. Yeah but in my area when the weather gets crappy Branchburg loses power in my area first...ugh.
djg0770 481 Posted November 26, 2014 Yeah but in my area when the weather gets crappy Branchburg loses power in my area first...ugh. Point taken. I have to do a calc on propane vs K-1.
mustang69 505 Posted November 26, 2014 At $6 a gallon my back of the napkin calculation indicates that an electric heater is cheaper to run than K-1 But I haven't found a 100,000 btu electric heater, and in a power outage it would draw too much current from my generator. The torpedo takes about 20 minutes on full-blast to warm my garage up to where I won;t freeze. I have 15 foot ceilings so need something large because of the volume. I had a 400,000 btu heater that was insane, but it sounded like a jet engine when it ran and was just too big for the space available. I may try a couple gallons of diesel just because of the price difference, but I don't really use that much to justify the smell (if there is any). djg0770 481 Posted November 26, 2014 But I haven't found a 100,000 btu electric heater, 30kW. Available, but 125 amps at 240V so you're not going to run that on your genny.
