Considering a .308 AR build

Recommended Posts

So now that my 5.56 build is complete, I'm looking for a new pit to throw my hard earned money into. So I'm starting to think about a .308 AR build.

Like my AR15 I'm going to build it up from a stripped lower and upper. Will the normal AR 15 fcg work with a .308 lower or is there a dedicated .308 fcg?

Everything else I can figure out, just need to know about the fire control group. Or I might even buy a match trigger. Not decided yet.

i was soo close to starting a .308 build, especially with the cost of palmetto's lowers, ultimately what stopped me is that the only "adequate" range within a reasonable distance is range 14, which is only 200 yards so i dropped the idea and now i'm looking to get an ak to fill that .30 cal gap lol

My buddy had a farm and a dedicated chuck of land that he shoots on, and as long as I bring the beer he has no problem sharing lol

It depends in the format of the .308. There's DPMS, armalite and RRA. Most build your own are DPMS formatted and I've done two. The parts kit is different but I am using Gieselle ar15 triggers in both. PM if you'd like to discuss the two I've built.

Off the track a little....

If you want a heftier cartridge in an AR platform there are other options.

Loads of wildcats but if you want a SAAMI cartridge 6.5 Grendel provides good ballistics.

And these all work in a AR15 sized receiver.

When I first started looking at getting or building an AR, two cartridges really interested me outside of 5.56. 6.5 Grendel and 6.8 spc II

I might consider doing a 6.5 build.

Nice thing is except for the barrel, bolt (uses std AR16/M16 bolt carrier) and magazine all parts are AR15/M16.

I still haven't made up my mind on what I want to do. Right now I'm looking at getting my first handgun and after that starting my .308 build or getting the tools together for a bolt action build on a mauser action. Ultimately, I decided against 6.5 or 6.8 because of parts availability.

I've done two .308s in the last year based on the DPMS format using BRO and DPMS parts respectively. I like the BRO with the shadow ops weaponry NiB BCG. Everything costs more in .308 though, be prepared.

I'd also like to build a 308 ar but a short version (for florida hog hunting). Does anyone own or built a .308 ar pistol? As in a rifle with short barrel (7-11"?). Are they even nj legal

anything less than 16" isn't legal anywhere without a tax stamp.  NJ doesn't allow you to have an SBR even with a tax stamp, so no, it isn't legal.   The barrel length must be fixed at 16" minimum.  If you own a place in Florida leave it down there and apply for a tax stamp.

I have no idea if anyone makes a barrel for a .308 that short.  If I wanted a 9-11" barreled rifle I'd do it in 300 blackout.

The terminal ballistics of a .30 caliber bullet coming out of such a short barrel would make it pointless.  Even at the muzzle, you wouldn't have the velocity needed for reliable expansion or fragmentation (depending on bullet design) with even the mid-weight projectiles.  You might get 50 yards out of a 110gr bullet but that would be a poor choice for hogs.  I can build SBRs legally but wouldn't go beyond 14.5" for utility's sake.  I did, however, just build a 16" barreled .308 AR that weighs within a half pound of my 18" 5.56 SPR.  That rifle will send a 155gr AMAX out at 2600FPS and hit at 400yds with more energy than hot 70+ grain 5.56 loads would at the muzzle.  It's a rifle I plan to hunt with so weight was a concern but I'm a firm believer that with the increased number of parts available for .308 builds and the steady reduction in cost of those parts, .308 carbines are going to start rivaling 5.56 AR15s as far as utility since the increased potency of .308 makes up for the reduction in magazine capacity (a consideration that isn't an issue in NJ).

    • We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in

    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. This is GM's updated version. it might be  pump gas 10-1 engine The L88 was a aluminum head  cast iron block engine with a nasty solid lifter cam. the  ZL1 was a all aluminum  12 or 13-1 compression ratio engine with the best forged internal parts at the time and had a even nastier solid lifter cam
    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
