Greetings from Morris County (Parsippany)

Recommended Posts

Hey, gang.  As a toddler, I grew up in NJ playing with cops and robbers with my friends using my index finger and thumb.  I would eventually graduate to plastic toy guns, but outgrew those and found myself nowhere to go.  Having spent the first 32 years of my life in northern NJ, Bergen county mostly, I moved out to Missouri and enjoyed five God-blessed years there with my family.  Having discovered the outdoors and hunting, I became a lover of archery and firearms.  Needless to say, the last five years was a revelation.

However, as of a month ago, I find myself back in NJ.  Yes, I relocated back to the NJ, where my wife and kids (and me, too, I suppose) will enjoy living closer to most of our extended family.  But it's not really as gun friendly as, oh, Missouri.  I'm in the middle of processing my NJFID.  All the requirements are in as of two days ago, and now I'm just crossing my fingers.

I'm happy to know that NJ has a dedicated firearms forum like this one.  I hope to be able to contribute when appropriate, but for now, I hope you don't mind if I pick your guys' and gals' brains about NJ specific stuff for a while.

God bless,

MM

Welcome aboard. Keep track of dates, who you speak to and who the detective in charge of processing your paperwork is. Get his number and don't hesitate calling or even showing your face to follow-up. They took 11 months to process my FID.

Welcome.

And just as an FYI, NJ does NOT require you to register any firearms legally acquired while resident of another state. Just make sure they are NJ compliant and the magazines hold 15 or less rounds. If the police strongly sugests your to register them, tell them to go piss up a rope. Politely, of course.

Greetings from Morris County. Parsippany isn't firearm friendly. Good luck and don't take any crap from them.

Welcome from a few towns over in Randolph.  I agree with the above, as a friend there just got his recently after waiting over 9 months!  Parsippany isn't driver friendly either, the cops there are used for massive revenue generation.  Watch yourself on RT80 where they patrol as well as RT10 and other roads.

Very true. Also in Randolph. When I was looking for towns to move to in Morris County, I cross referenced with the list of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, and at the time the mayor of Parsippany was on it. I'm not sure of the current mayor, but keep on them.

I initially stopped in at the PPD on July 7th to hand in my forms.  I asked my references to do their part right away.  They kindly did.  The soonest date I could schedule to have my prints completed was July 20th.  The next day, I went back in to the PPD to give them a copy of my passport.  I received a call from the records dept. at the PPD yesterday (August 4th), leaving a voicemail that my ID was ready to be picked up.  It took exactly 28 days for them to process my F.I.D. and P2Ps.  By NJ standards, I understand that this was a very quick turnaround.  Kudos to the gentleman that handled this for me.  I think his name is Russ.

My initial set was done in 23 days.  But that was Warren County (Independence Twp).  30 days is the state requirement to get an initial response from the local PD (or NJSP barracks).  It could be that it took the "County Adjustor's" office (where the mental health records are filed) that long to get back to the PPD.

    • We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in
    • I use an Alien Gear cloak tuck (IWB) with my Shield.  Neoprene back - in the summer it does feel warm but doesn't rub or chafe.   https://aliengearholsters.com/ruger-lcp-iwb-holster.html Could also go with the shapeshift as it has multiple options - OWB/IWB, Appendix... https://aliengearholsters.com/ruger-lcp-shapeshift-modular-holster-system.html
    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. This is GM's updated version. it might be  pump gas 10-1 engine The L88 was a aluminum head  cast iron block engine with a nasty solid lifter cam. the  ZL1 was a all aluminum  12 or 13-1 compression ratio engine with the best forged internal parts at the time and had a even nastier solid lifter cam
    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
    • Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
