I think it was because they were being sold at guns shows in the area.

One of these does not make a semi auto a machine gun even under NJ law. However shooting a rifle with this attached will attract the attention of police. Hearing one being fired would at least create probable cause for police to examine the weapon being fired. It would probably result in you being at least detained.

also it looked like from the slow mo at the end that he was actually turning the crank faster than the rifle could keep up, so he wasn't getting 3/rev
