  1. 1. Which reloading book do you recommend?

    • Lyman 49Th Edition Reloading Handbook
    • The ABCs Of Reloading: The Definitive Guide for Novice to Expert
    • Hornady 8th Edition Reloading Handbook

Recommended Posts

ABC's of reloading does not have load data but is a good read for those unfamiliar with the inner workings of cartridges and reloading.

I have ABC's, Lee's, and Lyman, along with LoadBooks from Midway for a few calibers. I personally try to stay away from books published by bullet or powder manufacturers because they tend to only include data for their own products. That's why i bought the Loadbooks, because they are just compiled from all of the manufacturer's books.

Every powder manufacturer has their data online and can be found on the 'net. The powder manufacturer ones (i.e. Hodgdon) will give you data for various bullets from different manufacturers. Most bullet manufacturers have their data online and can be found on the 'net as well. Get one "how to" book to explain all the basics as a resource. The two you have listed are good, I'd give the nod to Lyman.

Then get a Speer, Nosler or Hornady book. Join some reloading forums as well. They are good resources as well. A few I'd recommend that I use:

Hey guys...

So i'm about to start reloading and would like your opinions on which reloading handbook you'd recommend.

Do you they all have the most commonly used powders?

Nick, if you were to only have one I would make the Lyman's 49th. or at least get that one first. the more the better, however there is a lot of data on loads on the Powder manufacturers websites. Personal load data put up by people on different web sites be carefull with, especially when you are new and learning and don't ever go outside the recommend max loads, not until you have been at it for a long time.

What press are you looking at now??

This can't be impressed enough!

Press selection is another issue. What do you intend to load? Rifle calibers maybe a single stage or turret press is best do to the sequence of loading procedures. I you are loading pistol ammo, if you're careful, no reason not to jump into a progressive.

One thing for sure. If you are spending time doing your own loading you will end up being a better shooter, more accurate and measured IMHO. Because you'll have a greater appreciation for your efforts and tend to waste less ammo.

Thank you to everyone. I can't stress enough how much i appreciate all the input.

This forum is just GREAT!

Agreed. When you become savvy and comfortable to the process you will know where your boundaries are and your firearm's.

Everytime I see a reloading data book no matter how old or new I buy it....I specifically look for ones from the 60's....the old data for cast loads is great....

I've been looking for a Lyman book from the 50's or 60's. I'm trying to find loads for some older now less common calibers. I got some off the web, but a Lyman book would be priceless.

Most of my reloading stuff is from that era. I bought it all from a vintage estate. PM me what calibers you're looking for and I'll send you pdfs of what I have.

Be careful with vintage load books. Those load books were done with the powder at that time. The makeup of a given type of powder can change over the years. A lot of the changes are just CYA legal.

But some are real changes. What was safe with 1960's components may not be safe with 2010 components.

Don't remember the exact round, but an older load book had the maximum powder, 3 grains higher than a 2010 load book. This was for a 44 mag round.

Whaddya need???? :)

I have one that fits the bill.....

I'm looking for:

.41 Long Colt - have some internet recipes

.43 Egyptian - have nothing

7.35 Carcano - have some info from Lee die set, but couldn't hurt to get more.

Also looking for moulds in these calibers, especially .41 Long Colt if anyone has a lead on one.

Thanks

As far as using old load data, I'm aware of the practice of using minimum charges -10% and then working my way up from there.

Please read this entire post, there is a lot of information, please read read all of it before making a decision. I am selling ALL of my reloading equipment, everything set up for 9mm, 45 ACP, 223, and 308.
I will not ship Large or Hazmat items, pick up local in the Manalapan area. I am willing to drive 10 miles in any direction. For large orders I would consider driving further.
I can ship small items on your dime. Keep in mind, bullets are small but very heavy, shipping them will be expensive

My pricing methodology is simple, all prices are based on retail prices as of 6/29/2022:
All hardware, whether New or Used, is 10% below amazon prices.
Bullets are full retail price per powder valley and Berry’s prices for un-opened boxes. 10% below retail for loose bullets
All prices are rounded to the nearest dollar
There is always room to negotiate price as long as the offers are reasonable. But all negotiations must be completed prior to delivery, not during the delivery (I had a bad experience with this).

First “I’ll take it” in the thread, not via PM, gets the sale.
If we are negotiating via PM and someone says “I’ll take it” in the thread during negotiations, the “I’ll take it” gets the sale.

Most items can be purchased separately but some will need to be combined for obvious reasons. Here is the extensive list. Photos will be provided upon request, there are too many to put into the post.

I accept Cash or Paypal as gift

I loaded a few hundred 9mm with 5 grains of CFE-Pistol and 115 grain FMJRN heads. I have not had the chance to get to the range yet.
Does this load sound good, or too small?  I will also be using  some 115 grain plated and wondering if the same powder load would be correct.
I tried looking all over the Net for info on the CFE-Pistol but most of the info I found was for 124 grain or heavier heads.   Thanks!

    • Agreed, but it has been sold......
    • Have you done any research into the cost and licensing requirements to run a repeater? We own some mountainous acreage in a very rural part of Virginia RIdge and Valley country that serves as vacation place and potential SHTF retreat. We get mediocre cell phone coverage (US Cellular only) and nothing else. I have thought of putting an antenna tower up the hill a ways (we own nearly to the top of the ridge. I wouldn't do it just for Ham or GMRS radio, but if I could get expanded cell coverage, and/or satellite internet (Dish or Starlink) as well, from one tower, I might go for it. ==== sorry, didn't  intend to hijack the thread ====
    • The biggest problem with this announcement is that the FBI has proven itself to be completely untrustworthy, but it is the agency charged with keeping the public informed about such developments. So, this is something that Wray and the FBI want us to believe, because they are convinced that is in their best interests that we do so. But how much objective truth is there to it? Are Biden's enviro-Nazi puppeteers planning to sabotage the internet and what is left of our petrochemical production capability and somehow false flag attribute that attack to the Chinese? Unlikely, but it's terrible and damning that I even need to seriously consider that possibility. It's a dilemma. Reminds me of an old Star Trek TV episode where Kirk short-circuits some robotic adversary by telling it, "I always lie. Listen very carefully. I am lying to you..." Personally, I'll wait until I see some corroboration of this from something that I regard as a trusted source (and those are few and far between these days) before I buy it.
