Have a bunch of brass.... and some questions?

Recommended Posts

Anyone know what the value of Brass casings are? That is, actual value, not scrap? I was going to scrap some or send it to Freedom for them to reload, but maybe someone local is interested? I have a plastic bin full, probably 40something pounds worth.. Some is old crap i picked up that's been sitting on the ground and stepped all over, some is new stuff i shot, some is reloaded ammo i shot from Freedom. A fair amount is stuff my buddy gave me when he would shoot, rather than leave it for the range to collect. I'm in Woodbridge; if someone wants to pick through and take what they want, have at it... It's a mix of calibers.. Mostly going to be .223/5.56, with a few 308/30-06 and some handgun calibers mixed in. Whats left i'll probably save up until i have a large amount and scrap... not sure its worth sending to freedom munitions, seeing as i can probably only fit 30lbs, if that, in a large flat rate box that costs 15$ to ship.

Shoot me a PM if you'd like to stop by... Again, for the right price you can pick through and take the 'good' stuff.. the garbage will probably be trashed. I don't know how much of it is reloadable as i don't know crap about reloading, but there should be a fair amount of new stuff (shot quite a bit of .223, .45 and 9mm).

The issue here is you're asking someone to "pick through and take the good stuff", you're essentially asking them to do the work for you.  Then pay you for the privilege.

People who buy brass will typically want it sorted to be that 1 specific caliber they're looking for.  If it's mixed calibers and a lot isn't usable, you're looking at scrap pricing.

If you take the time to sort it, here are some rough estimates for common calibers:

9mm - 2-3c per piece

223 - 5-6c per

40 - 2-3c per

45 - 4-5c per

You find what the current pricing is by looking at sites like castboolits and brian enos and seeing what brass sales are going for on there.

I don't expect people to do the work and pay me 'retail'; the idea was if i'm going to scrap the crap, at least someone here will make out and save a few bucks on good brass.

I'll have to weigh some and see if its worth the effort over just scrapping it when prices go back up (hopefully). The only ones worth saving are probably going to be my 223/556 and 45.
Any idea if previously reloaded stuff is worth anything, or is that also scrap?

Thanks!

While the price Freedom gives you is not nearly as good as it was a year ago, you can fit a lot more than 30# in a flat rate box.  When I was sending it in I always got over 50# and have gotten as much as 59# in one of those flat rate boxes.

Yeah. Put the 380's inside the 9's. The 9's inside the 40's. The 40's inside the 45's. Bammm. Just easily doubled the weight howard. [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Not worth my hourly rate to go to that effort, but yes that is possible.

Lmao. I dont remember the exact dimensions of the large FRB but unless the bin is much heavier than i think, i don't think 40 or 50, for that matter, pounds worth of it would fit. Its a fairly nice sized bin. I'll probably pick up a box and try it out, since they are free anyways.

Believe me it fits as I have done it several times.

50 pounds of center fire pistol brass will definitely fit in a LFRB. Have done it many times. If you work at smoothing it into the box I've gotten as high as 53. I haven't bothered to nest the various calibers, but you could if you have nothing better to do.

Accounting for the shipping cost the value of 50 pounds returned to Freedom is around $55.

Some of it is reloaded from freedom munitions, but all of the PMC/Wolf will be brand new(once fired). I'll have to go through it and pull out anything that people on here can actually use and just scrap or send in all of the garbage.

I looked it up and local scrap yards are offering 1.20$/lb for casings, as is...
I'll take mine there, rather than get a store credit of 1.45$/lb. Even if i can fit 50 pounds of casings in a box, if it is 15$ to ship said box i am only left with 1.15$/lb *store credit*, versus 1.20$/lb cash money and they dont check calibers, condition, etc..

That said, i sorted through what i had and have a ton of casings available if anyone on here reloads and needs some.
Tons of .223 and 9mm for the most part. some 3006, 308, 45 and 40 as well.
