  1. I have a Spyderco Tenacious, which I generally carry for various tasks such as slicing apples, opening boxes, and in case I need to cut through a seatbelt. Generally I open carry it clipped onto my belt--it has a belt clip and is designed to clip onto a belt. And that is really the most convenient and sensible way to carry it--easy access and does not take valuable pocket space. Recently I have become concerned if this is a smart way to carry in NJ. Is open carry of a knife considered brandishing? I could not find a legal definition of brandishing in NJ law--based on Webster's definition, open carry on the belt is NOT brandishing, but Webster's is not a lawyer... How do you carry? And do you recommend open carry or not of a knife in NJ? thanks!
  2. I saw a review of this in American Handgunner. They called it a remarkable engineering feat, which I call questionable. It is impressive, but remarkable? I'd call the space shuttle, or sub 20nM semiconductor processes a remarkable feat of engineering. Do you think two 8-round magazines is NJ legal--since each magazine is less than 15 rounds?
  3. I like Kurosawa a lot--Ran, Seven Samurai, etc. Il Postino (Michael Radford) Not least for the story behind it of the lead (Massimo Troisi), who postponed heart surgery to complete the film, and died of a heart attack the shortly after filming it. Brazil (Terry Gilliam) I was just astounded the first time I saw this in the theater. Intense, but I find many people really hate it as much as I love it. The Four Hundred Blows (Truffaut) I really do not remember much about this--I will have to watch it again soon. But I did find it intriguing.
  4. So it made rational sense to this guy that he should destroy state property because weed is illegal, and somehow that would help his cause? We do not have enough information to support any causal connection--could be weed, or maybe he is just crazy, but obviously the guy was not really thinking this through. I do not think that the legal status of weed was the causal factor.
  5. My only options are Verizon DSL (no FiOS), Comcast, or dish. I have never really liked Comcast, so I have Verizon for Internet and phone. It is ok--not exactly fast, and Lord help you if you have a problem becasue their customer service is unbelievable bad, I really do not have adequate words to express how bad. Luckilly I only deal with that on the frequent occasions I lose voice service (no dialtone but still have DSL). I am sure Comcast customer service is comprable... For TV I use broadcast (from Philadelphia). We are on the fringe, but I get all ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, WPHL, WHYY, NJN, WYBE (Indy public), and Univision, WPSG (CW?) and some ION channel. I also have a Google TV box from Logitech.
  6. I get a message that the Serena video is blocked: "This video contains content from International Olympic Comittee, who has blocked it on copyright grounds" I imagine IOC purses a DMCA notice and takedown to get these blocked, and Youtube just has to block them rather than risk possible consequencs. But is this applied on all Olympic video? What about fair use? I thought fair use would cover transmission of short clips for news, discussion, etc. but may be a gray area?
  7. To the OP, I am also fairly new to this forum and I am way in favor of CCW and gun-control laws along the lines of AZ, but I recognize that on any forum there is going to be a broad range of opinion, and there are some on this forum who disagree with my POV. But I appreciate the debate, and I try to read everything and remain open to different views. I enjoy the discussion and I do not plan to leave because there are people with different views. 8. I am thinking that if only they had done some background checks and basic mental health screening, there is no way this guy would have been able to obtain such a large arsenal of tractors! Would never happen in Bloomberg's NYC.

  10. IANAL, but the plain languauge that has been referenced several times in this thread seems as clear as the summer's sun--the transport is covered under the safe passage language of FOPA. I see no requirement indicating that it only applies to the intermediate states that one is travelling through, only requirement I see is legal possession at point of origin and destination. 18 U.S.C. § 926a: Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.
  11. So the Federal Aviation Administration can override state laws at the airport, but the federal govt , under 18 U.S.C. § 921 et seq, cannot? And I could legally drive from my residence to EWR and then fly to PHL, but I can't drive directly to PA?
  12. I would worry that it become so comfortable that I forget--and walk out to the store, or even to get the mail since the mailbox is about 20 feet past our property line. I would need one of those invisible fences that would taze me if I walked over the property line while carrying.
  13. Selling GE stock has little effect on the corporation. If you want to do something, buy the stock, or keep the stock you have, and exercise your rights as an OWNER to vote, pursue owner (shareholder) actions and attend owner's meetings and make your voice heard. Every corporation has primary responsibility to benefit its owners, usually that means maximizing profits. I do not blame GE for minimizing its taxes--I'd do the same thing; and if I could legally pay zero, I would. It is the government's fault for allowing it. I strongly believe that if our national policy allows and promotes truly free trade, lower taxes (why do you think corporations are relocating south) and immigration that is more in line with historical immigration policies; AND less redistribution and hand-outs, our industry and economy would flourish.
  14. The $3 targets are about 30"hx 20"w mounted on a 2"x1/2" You can make a decent target holding frame out of 1" - 1.5" PVC If you do not glue the frame into the base it is easy to break down and secure in a trunk for transport. You really can't beat the price, and I much prefer the outdoor range (weather permitting). I have never had to wait, but I usually get there right at 0800. You can call ahead though if you think it might be a busy day. The RO is pretty strict, but I don't see that as a bad thing, I am also glad to see they have guys walking the line to look for stupid activity. I was out last saturday around noon (and about 100 Degrees F). I had just arrived and was watching two guys on the adjacent station while waiting for the cease fire. I noticed one guy is standing IN FRONT of the table, leaning back on the table and shooting. I was thinking where is the RO, they are usually right on that. Then I see one of the ROs running over and yelling at the guy to move back behind the safety line. The guy starts to turn toward me (to move back) with his 9mm still drawn and sweeping toward me. So I duck and run back toward my car. Once the 9 was secured I walked over and hear the RSO yelling at him "Did you see that guy running away" and "keep the muzzle pointed down range at al times" etc. So it seems like they do keep pretty good watch over the range. I am also considering CJRPC. It is about the same distance for me, a lot more money, but it has more facilities and 24x7 access.
  15. Our chipmunks pretty much stay out near the woodline, and I rarely see them--mostly squirrels and rabbits and deer; so far they have not breached my garden's perimieter fence after I pinned the bottom 12 inches to the ground. I do notice a lot of small caliber holes, presumably dug by voles--some even come into my raised beds! What (besides cats) do you use to bait and catch the voles? I try to discourage stray/feral cats because they tend to also damage wildlife that I like--such as songbirds.
  16. Isn't the onus on the guy carrying? Isn't he ultimately responsible for every bullet that is fired from his weapon? This is most probably an accident, or at worst a possible "crime of passion" if say his wife grabbed it in a jealous reaction. But isn't the guy who is CCW completely responsible to maintain control of the weapon? Unless of course it is taken by force, say in a hostage or home invasion scenario.
  17. Yes, we should hope for strict interpretation and aggressive prosecution of NJ gun law--that and a little publicity would be the quickest way to rational gun laws.
  18. I would also recomend home-practice including loading and dry-firing with snap-caps and some drills to access the firearm, chamber a round and fire under simulated pressure conditions. I do this with snap caps too of course, and of course always ALWAYS unload and check the firearm, and lock up LOCK UP the real ammo before doing any drill, especially when dry-fire is involved. I also made a one page, large font checklist with diagrams for my wife to refer to--have it posted right next to the gun safe in case she panics--so she does not forget about the safety or something.
  19. Lakehurst is the 'L' in JBMDL. And it is not that far from Tinton Falls. I usually hear the range activity at JBMDL--shakes the whole house, it is pretty cool. Maybe coincidental, but the range activity (bombing?) and helo flyovers were extremely high Wednesday night. I can't remember how late it went, but we were feeling a high number of explosions, several series in rapid succession. Much more activity than I can remember. Could be a coordinated training exercise throught the region? It's all good, except I temporarilly lose broadcast TV reception during a lot of the flyovers.
  20. My town sent it directly to my super--he signed it and gave it to me, and I returned it to the PD. I thought it was a little strange, because my company has an 800 number AND a website where they can easilly verify my employment.
  21. It would give you greater leeway for trips to the range, hunting, etc. than if you are transporting a handgun. E.g. would allow you to make unreasonable and unnecessary deviations or combine a range trip with other errands.
  22. Is there any law proscribing or restricting target practice with a compound bow on my own property. E.g. minimum size requirement, bow-free zones, etc?
  23. So I finally had a chance to ride my bicycle to Range 14 last Saturday. Nice weather, although a little humid. Just to make sure I was compliant with transport law, I had my RIA .45 fastened in its plastic case, inside a securely tied plastic trash bag, inside a zippered pannier--I only used the trash bag because I use the panniers for food as well and I am paranoid about Pb. No problems in transport--about 15 miles one way. I got to the range at 0830 and it was not crowded at all, shot from station Alpha. Absolutely no issues with the RO. Nice day to shoot!
  24. "The people of New York City are much smarter than the New York City Health Department believes" I hope this is borne out in the public comment period. I do not have a problem with labeling requirements--I have a right to know what is in everything I buy for consumption. That is as far as the state should go. I should be free to choose what I eat and drink. The labeling requirement facilitates my choice. The state has NO compelling interest in my free choice to lifestyle, what I buy or sell, or entry into any legal contract. Unless, of course, the state is responsible for my healthcare--then there is a compelling government interest to control just about every choice I make.
