oldslabsides 2 Posted July 24, 2009 Kerosene or gasoline remove cosmo very well. Just try not to blow the place up. Outside in a coffee can or a size that fits the parts. Did it for an SKS that I bought years ago.
Maksim 1,504 Posted July 24, 2009 have the parts in boiling water outside right now... then will clean it up with a light wool pad.
PK90 3,573 Posted July 24, 2009 Best way to rid it of cosmoline is to put the parts in your oven @ 200 degrees.

Tom609 27 Posted July 25, 2009 Dechlorinated brake cleaner. It's available at your local auto parts store. It works quick and easy. Use it outdoors and wear gloves and glasses. I've used it to get the cosmo out of several rifles. Two cans should do a whole rifle.
ctrmass 0 Posted August 27, 2009 I use walmart brake cleaner. About $1 a can. That with a stiff old paint brush should get any cosmoline off, especially in the hot weather. :ugeek:
rscalzo 3 Posted August 27, 2009 My oven actually gets used. Anastasia likes to bake and broil. That would get my butt kicked out of the house. My wife's high class Viking thing is off limits to me. I'm only allowed to use the microwave. As far as soaking, try lacquer thinner but I'd do it outside as it stinks up the house. Then get a decent parts brush and brush then all down. Buy disposable gloves to keep it off your skin. Put them on some alum. foil in a nice hot direct sun will loosen them a bit. It works for those really ugly soaked socks too.
