What are some basic tools you would need to do work on your AR?

One of those all in one AR wrenches are awesome

 

you have the things to push the pins out, adjust the stock everything ya need

 

check AIM for a cheap one I tihnk thats wehre I bought mine or maybe Midway

 

also of course need a cleaning kit

If you are building from the receiver up, a good punch set it always a help a few round flat and round tipped brass punches

are good. An action block is good for using in a vise, and the multi tool mentioned above. Hand guard removal tools can be helpful but are not necessary. If you going to build more then one then you may want to look into an armorers kit, made by colt or DPMS its a bit of an investment but comes with everything you need for complete lower and upper assembly.

Wow... that may be a bit much.

 

I just need enough to change the stock and remove the front sight/gas block. The punches might be useful when changing the trigger guard though.

Just use a pen or the firing pin to depress the button for the trigger guard. Though, I do agree the punches would have other uses, and not just with firearms.
