New Era of Police Vehicles

Recommended Posts

I had a '94 Impala SS, which was the same as the Caprice 9c1 with the LT1 350. Everybody called it the Corvette engine, but it really wasn't. The reverse flow cooling and opti-spark were derived from the Vette motor, but the heads were identical to the Vortec 350 truck heads from the mid 90's. They were designed for torque. I put a GMPP 845 cam in my Impala and it took that 4300 lb boat from 15.2 in the 1/4 mi. down to 14.2, with no other mods. After putting in 1-5/8 headers, a ram-air hood/intake, 2-1/2" cat-back, and a performance tune, it went 13.98 on street tires, with a full tank of gas and the full size spare in the trunk. When I put the 3.73 gears in it, it went 13.4's and started breaking parts, like lower control arms...

When I had it dyno'd, it put down 300 ft-lbs of torque at the rear wheels from 1800-5400 rpm, and it peaked at 326 ft-lbs, so the curve was flat. The cops in my home town had Caprices, but they wanted their cars to have the same work mine had.

Damn, I miss that car...

The police department in my town has had the chargers for at least 3 years now and talking to the town mechanics at work, they say they are nothing but junk and can't hold up like the crown vics did. They have been breaking down since they got them.

The PPV. I already owned one. It is called the Pontiac G8 GT. It was a 6.0 with a 6spd auto. It was quick and handled excellent. 0-60, 5 sc, 1/4ml 13.5 sc.

Here it is: 2009 Pontiac G8 GT - AKA - the "NEW" 2013 PPV.

These have been made in Austarlia for years. It is GM's Holden division. They even make this car with a pickup bed--that's right, an El Camino...

from one person I am hearing LEO complain that the chargers are small up front once loaded with gear.

I have heard the same as well. The chargers may be nice detective cars or unmarked cars, but once you put everything in them, it makes it a tight fit.

Edit for spelling

We in the Impala SS community always thought that should've been the next gen Impala SS; not the FWD POS we wound up with. After that, and killing off the Camaro in 2002, I lost a lot of respect for GM. They seem to be making a come-back in the performance world, but I can't see past the government bailout to justify buying any GM product.

I thought it would be released as a Chevy Impala SS also, but it never happened. Pontiac was also ready to bring the El Camino version here, but they crushed the brand and that ended that. Im thinking they will release this platform again in a few years in a civilian version. Maybe they will call it an Impala SS or Caprice SS.

Im not that big a fan of GM anymore either,
