Tenafly 11/24 Knock Down Steel

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of attending this as my first competition style event. Would this be good for a beginner? I'm assuming from the event name that I'll be knocking down steel targets (looks like my college education is paying off!). Does this involve a lot of running around? Or are you basically standing in place? I've done a little bit of shooting from a holster, though I'm not going to set any speed records. I'll admit I'm a bit nervous at the idea of running around with a gun in my hand.

I'm pretty sure it's standing in place.

This post (though about static, not knockdown) has some good info on tenafly steel matches.

And I'm sure someone will be along shortly to add some info (topher?)

You rang...?

I'm going as well.  Have no fear, it is competitive in name only.  It's a fun way to get to shoot your gun at speed and have a great time.  The range officer will walk you thru thru the rules and what to expect.

It is a "static" shoot meaning you will be standing in place.

The only crappy part of it is that your idea of fun while shooting will no longer include hanging paper targets.

Agreed.  It's very low key, beginner-friendly, and a lot of fun.  Entry is $10 per gun, 3 stages.  No prizes, just bragging rights.  Static steel should be all standing in place, they do sometimes run what they call pro-am matches which have a very limited amount of movement.  I get there occasionally, don't yet know if I'll be there Sunday.

I was watching some videos, and I see some drawing from a holster, while others they're starting with their gun on a table. Any idea what tomorrow's match will be? Because if the former, I'll need to pick up a proper holster belt. I've also been having extraction issues with my XD9 lately, hope they don't pop up tomorrow.

I've only seen alternate start positions, like gun on table, at an occasional pro-am match there--not for knockdown steel.   That said, I've made it to fewer than 10 matches there so far, so I'm sure I've not seen everything they do.

From what I've seen, they also seem just fine with letting people start from the low ready position (already holding gun, arms down at a 45 degree angle).   Some folks show up without a holster, or aren't comfortable yet drawing from one, and they all get accommodated.  Since there is no prize money on the line, nobody worries about it being an unfair advantage.

There is a contact email on the Tenafly website.  The match organizer is very helpful, and can provide more definitive answers--I'm not a member of the club, just an occasional participant.

How does this one compare to the Knockdown event @ OBRPC ? what's the non member price ?

There's usually 3 simple stages with at least 12 targets. Club has plenty of steel, Texas star, plate rack and a decreasing plate size sequence rigs. It all depends what CRO takes out. It's $10 to shoot for non members and $5 for additional gun.
