Redstachio 0 Posted March 23, 2015 Good evenings, fellas. Just wanted to say a quick hello before The Walking Dead starts... Just put in my paperwork to the local PD for my initial FID after dad announced his intentions to hand down his old .22 rifles and Winchester 12ga to me. Who knows, maybe by this fall I'll have an update. All this paperwork and wait time is certainly making me miss my home state of Vermont. What to do in the meantime....... boo 6 Posted March 23, 2015 Welcome to the forums and good luck. I know Hudson County turns around its mental health checks relatively quick, but I can't speak for the individual PD processing times. Just curious if you're in Jersey City and if they're still asking for the extra illegal forms.
Redstachio 0 Posted March 23, 2015 I'm dealing with Bayonne...and knowing them, they'll take their time. Not sure how far they go back (10years?) for mental health but I'm a new NJ resident as of 2013 so they'll be going out of state for additional non-existent records. Not the end of the world, I did put in for handgun permit so this will give me some time to decide on what direction to go in once it goes through. Underdog 1,593 Posted March 23, 2015 As an FYI, you could have applied for more than one handgun permit. And, they are suppose to be good for 180 days. As long as the chief does his job. You might want a 22 of some kind and a defensive weapon, or possibly a semi-auto and a revolver. Or, you might want a "full size" and a "compact". Or, you might get one and decide it isn't the one for you. With the waiting times in Hudson it is worth an extra $2-$4 dollars or so to avoid the lengthy and unjust permitting process. To the best of my knowledge, it took over a year for someone in North Bergen to get a permit, and it was made as hard as possible... Wednesday between 10 an 10:30, etc. As a side note, Hudson County, NJ, is perhaps the most corrupt county in all of the USA. Good Luck.
Redstachio 0 Posted March 23, 2015 If I wasn't on limited funds for the next 8mo I would've certainly applied for additional permits. As an impulse buyer in regards to other hobbies, it's definitely better that way for me in the short term to keep it to the one handgun. I'll have my hands full as it is with .22 lever and pump 12ga. Been out of the shooting loop for 20 years or so, so I want to ease back in. Yeah, new to Hudson county, but my peers brought me up to speed (ot lack thereof) on the pace of local government, especially here in Bayonne.
Golf battery 1,223 Posted March 23, 2015 Welcome. My whole family is from there. Right off the boat in the 1880's My parents and grandparents told me they remember the small farm fields in bayonne. Hah can you even try to imagine that.
Redstachio 0 Posted March 23, 2015 Irish or Polish? I try not to think about what this area looked like a couple hundred years ago. City life is ok, but I spent the first 24 years of my life in New England so to me it's a little tight.
Golf battery 1,223 Posted March 24, 2015 Yes polish. -------ski. Actually. Murphy my grandfather married a ski. But 80 percent ski. That wasn't acceptable back then but they went to the same church. St. Andrews i think. Lower broadway towards the Hudson i think.
Michael2013 56 Posted March 24, 2015 Welcome! No need to wait patiently till fall. Ping them in two months.
El-Groucho 0 Posted March 25, 2015 Welcome and keep us posted. I got my initial FID from North Bergen about 15 years ago. It was longer than 30 days, where isn't sadly. If I recall it was probably 3 months. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Redstachio 0 Posted March 25, 2015 Well, so far so good. Just got a text from one of my references and he got his questionnaire in the mail today from Bayonne PD. Off to a good start, I guess.
BlueLineFish 615 Posted March 25, 2015 They get the reference sheets out quick. By the way Welcome...Bayonne here as well

PD2K 115 Posted March 26, 2015 Welcome to the forums! Take heart...I'm willing to bet the permitting process is much better in Bayonne than Jersey City.
Newtonian 453 Posted March 26, 2015 I hope you had a good reason for moving from one of the prettiest, least restrictive gun states to the #1 worst gun state, the armpit of the USA. Be aware that guns are only part of the problem in NJ. I grew up in Hoboken and couldn't wait to leave. Back in the 1890s or so Bertrand Russel wrote about the industrial wasteland comprising the lower meadowlands, roughly south of North Bergen. So you'd have to go back quite a ways to hit pristine NJ. Redstachio 0 Posted March 26, 2015 I had my reasons and they were well worth it, despite the firearms restrictions. Truth be told, prior to Jersey and post-Vermont I was in Massachusetts for nearly 10 years so I'd consider it somewhat of a step up in terms of my present situation. djg0770 481 Posted March 26, 2015 As an FYI, you could have applied for more than one handgun permit. And, they are suppose to be good for 180 days. Not exactly correct. Permits are good for 90 days. Just prior to the end of 90 days, you MIGHT be able to get your permits extended for another 90 days, but it's at the local Police Chief's discretion. Redstachio 0 Posted May 13, 2015 Good afternoon, gentlemen. Good news from Bayonne, got a call this morning and just now picked up my FID and one purchase permit from city hall. Submitted March 18th and ready May 13th. Just over seven weeks...not bad, Bayonne. Not bad.
.357MagNYC 0 Posted May 14, 2015 Congrats! I'll be going through that process soon. Quick question, since like me you moved from out-of-state: were your references NJ residents?
Redstachio 0 Posted May 14, 2015 Yes, they were. I've been here for a couple years already and used new acquaintances instead of old out-of-state friends. I figured it would look a little strange to do otherwise. Congrats! I'll be going through that process soon. Quick question, since like me you moved from out-of-state: were your references NJ residents?
OfcrFek 21 Posted May 16, 2015 I submitted mine the same day.... still waiting in Evesham Twp....

Pizza Bob 1,488 Posted June 14, 2015 Quick question, since like me you moved from out-of-state: were your references NJ residents? Not required to be. If your PD tells you they must be, they're lying - ask for the cite.
.357MagNYC 0 Posted June 17, 2015 Not required to be. If your PD tells you they must be, they're lying - ask for the cite. Thanks. There was no problem with my out-of-state references in Bayonne. And they told me to keep my FID until I received the new one. Overall a very pleasant experience.
