Quality Leather Holsters

Recommended Posts

Leather or nylon belt? For leather, Milt Sparks, Alessi, Ritchie Holsters are some I would look into. For nylon, the Ares Gear Aegis belt gets my top vote.

As for the Galco, it sucks. Mass produced junk. Stick with smaller hand made leather holster shops such as Sparks.

Garret industries does a nice hybrid Kydex - leather lined holster too

I'm thinking I may get one of their competition holsters for speed on steel

something about sliding my duty treat wesson in and out of kydex 30 times in a day bothers me

I have a Beltman and A&G custom belt and feel that the latter is made better. The A&G has nicer leather, stitching, burnishing, etc... I also opted for the internal stiffener which definitely helps prevent the leather from sagging. He also offers 10% active military/1st responder discount.

If you use a leather holster, I would recommend getting the mouth reinforced. That will prevent the leather from folding over and potentially causing an AD when holstering. Also, the holster that the guy, who had the AD, was using is garbage.

+1 on milt sparks. Got one for my colt and it fits it like a glove.

Question for the group. I need a good 1.5 inch gun belt. I get a ton of sag with the one I have now

Look at Alien Gear holsters. Reasonably priced. Have spring steel sandwiched between leather layers. No sag there.

A quality holster will already be designed with this in mind. If you abuse a holster (store it so it's squared flat, use the wrong products to maintain it,etc) you can ruin a good holster.

While I generally agree with not storing a gun in a holster I don't think that's an absolute (like most things). It most likely is a good idea for guns with a high polish blued gun. My Ruger P90, S&W M60, and other stainless guns have been stored in holsters for 20 or more years. My blued Taurus 1911 is about 10 years old. Supposedly notorious for having a poor finish. It's been in the holster unless I was shooting it, cleaning it, or showing it all the time with no bad effects for those 10 years. It's also the one I pick when I carry a 1911 over all my others which are older Colts. That's a topic for another thread.

I recommend Mitch Rosen Holsters.  Bought mine through Dillon years ago.  For belts I wear a 5.11 Off-Duty belt.  It can support a brace of Colt's Dragoon Horse Pistols (4.5 pounds of steel on each hip) for my Hog Hunting trips in PA.!

Do you mind linking me to that belt?  I don't see any "off duty" belts on 5.11's website.

I bought the double duty off of Amazon it's a nice belt

this signature exceeds the 15 character capacity count

Have you carried with it? I carry a full size 1911 sometimes and it gets heavy

I carried my 686 with it around the house but nothing for an extended time. At work I carry a walkie talkie and usually have full pockets and It holds my pants up fine. I carried my shield in North Carolina and it was great with that

I've carried full size SAs and revolvers for years. Carry it often enough and it won't seem so heavy. A good holster like a pancake type mitigate the weight significantly. The extra weight is worth it when you get a gun easier to shoot well and a longer barrel and/or a more effective caliber. Concealing a full size gun is not as hard as many think.

I wasn't talking about weight as far as fatigue goes. Its more the weight bringing the belt down. I want something sturdy enough for a full size steel gun. My milt sparks is a comfy holster.

    • We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in
    • I use an Alien Gear cloak tuck (IWB) with my Shield.  Neoprene back - in the summer it does feel warm but doesn't rub or chafe.   https://aliengearholsters.com/ruger-lcp-iwb-holster.html Could also go with the shapeshift as it has multiple options - OWB/IWB, Appendix... https://aliengearholsters.com/ruger-lcp-shapeshift-modular-holster-system.html
    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. This is GM's updated version. it might be  pump gas 10-1 engine The L88 was a aluminum head  cast iron block engine with a nasty solid lifter cam. the  ZL1 was a all aluminum  12 or 13-1 compression ratio engine with the best forged internal parts at the time and had a even nastier solid lifter cam
    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
    • Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
