Crawl space vent, good? Bad?

Hey guys, have yet another house hold question. Other day I decided to clean out the nasty crawl space. While in there I noticed I have two vent plates. One was close the other was open. Now also while noticing this I saw that the one is loose and needs to be held in better to prevent critters. When googling what’s the best was to hold vent up I came across links to people having mix reviews on vents. Some said to disregard and have permanently shut while others said they are smart.

So what are your thoughts?

 Ventilation is a good thing, allows moisture to dissipate and not condense on things, that causes mold, rust and rot esp, when you are located in a Mixed-Humid climate.

There are crawl space vents that open and close with the temp. well worth the price.

My foamers will tell you, foam slab, and walls.. right over the vents..

rat slabs are ginormous sponges.. throw a hygrometer down in the crawl in the summer... vents open. Let me know the humidity

My concern with the foam, if you are referring to “Great Stuff” in aersonal, mice can just chew their way through.

This debate has been going on for years.  First thing we need to know is the bottom of crawl space dirt or concrete?

Generally you want it to breathe. If you have a concrete floor, tape down a piece of plastic sheeting and see if you get condensation under it.

Better, go to bestbuy and buy a cheap weather center with a remote sensor.. jus make sure it does humidity. $20 and watch.

No signs of mold. Crawl space floor is concrete, walls are cinder blocks.

this. Crawl spaces if to well ventilated in the winter can freeze pipes

zeke I know! I am, my next issue to fix is calling around to see who will take up my patio and level and reinstall pavers. There’s low spots which is causing efflorescence in that area in the basement...lovely
