Friggin spammers....

Recommended Posts

I am having to delete on an average day, 2 or 3 automated bots trying to register on the forum, so they can post viagra ads.

Surprisingly, 95% of them are from Moldova, & Ukraine,

I ban the ips, contact their providers, and even email them telling them I will be in Ukraine this summer... but alas... still get spammed.

Today though, had another spam bot from Holland.

It is a nuisance because I have to go through the list to check ips manually, do not want to prevent people from registering. Most bots, register on the forum, but have no ability to go to their email and activate the account.

What the real problem is, we have had 2 spammers that were actually human. People from India are hired, to post on message boards, they register, activate, fill out the complete profile, upload an avatar! and then add a spam message.

ARgh! I guess it means the forum is growing. ;)

If we did not delete the spam users, we would be over 400 members by now. hehe.

I've heard about this on other sites as well.

The most effective way to combat it is to prevent automated registration - which makes a boatload of work for you Maksim and other mods, and means registrations may take a day to get approved...

Spam sucks, and it's not green - it wastes energy! Obama should prevent it.

Well, the automated ones are fine... its the human talent from India that is the problem. =P

But having to approve each user individually... can take a long time. Case in point, to register on H&K website... took a week.

Yes I can. =)

Though it is website wide. It is not as accurate as something that the forum software can report.

So far we had, through yesterday, for this month only.

Unique visitors: 1619 (people at their computers)

Visits: 6,331 (3.9 visits per visitors)

Pages Loaded: 141,000 (22.35 pages per visits) so viewing posts, etc.

Stats are skewed as alot of folks come here, once, register, thats it. or view without registering.

95% of the people use windows.

Surprisingly, only 68% of the visits were with internet explorer. 18% firefox, 9% opera.

I use opera so skewing that stat a little. I know of a few others that use it as well.

As far as how much time people spend here...

Number of visits: 6331 - Average: 792 s

Number of visits Percent

0s-30s 2392 37.7 %

30s-2mn 730 11.5 %

2mn-5mn 730 11.5 %

5mn-15mn 851 13.4 %

15mn-30mn 495 7.8 %

30mn-1h 512 8 %

1h+ 612 9.6 %

Unknown 9 0.1 %

The broad average is a little over 13 mins per visit to the website. Obivously, this is the broad average. But 80/20 rule.... 25% of the visitors spend at least 15 mins on the website. with almost 10% being over an hour. and 17% over half an hour.

This comes from my web host... I dont know who spends the most time here ,etc. none of that stuff is tracked. Furthermore, the forum software does not track individual time etc. No records are kept, no information sold or given out.
