  1. What a difference a state makes. I was amazed when I found primers, powder and bullets for sale at the WalMart in Woodstock, VA. They stock a great selection for great prices.
  2. I hunt in Canada twice a year with a group of retired Canadian military guys. Nobody is allowed to carry handguns except LEO and military. According to the RCMP in order to carry for protection in the woods: "In general, the only firearms allowed for wilderness protection are non-restricted rifles and shotguns. The following individuals, provided they are Canadian residents and have a licence that allows them to possess restricted firearms, may be authorized to carry a handgun or restricted long gun for wilderness protection: licensed professional trappers, and individuals who need protection from wild animals while working at their lawful occupation, most often in a remote wilderness location." I would recommend mailing your handgun from the last CONUS state you will be traveling through prior to entering Canada to yourself at a location in Alaska and doing the reverse for the return trip.

  4. I was given a case of Break Free CLP bottles along with a 1 gallon jug in the late 1980's that I got from a friend that was an armorer. This is the original Teflon stuff and that is what I use for lubing my guns (except for grease on the reveiver of the Garand, M1A and Mini14). I prefer Hoppe's solvent for cleaning. Never had an issue with this combination. I have tried some of the newer wonder lubes and was not impressed enough to switch.
  5. I live within an hour of Ft Shenandoah and heard bout the North-South Shooting Association (N-SSA) from a guy at a gun shop. It seems very interesting to me. They shoot civil war era guns, reproductions are allowed if on the approved list. I was wondering if anyone on the forum has any experience or insight into this type of shooting. I will be going to watch a match this weekend. It looks huge and there are teams from all over that attend. I started looking at the approved list of guns and have no real clue about what to buy. Any insight is greatly appreciated.
  6. I had a situation like this before and used spray, didn't really work. I hired a pest control guy that used a powder and destroyed the nest. What type are they? European or Bald Faced? The European and not aggressive unless the nest is disturbed. The Bald Faced are very aggressive.
  7. I didn't ask. They also had a blued one with a really long barrel and a Leupold scope for $3000. The bluing on that one was near mint. I will check to see if they have the box for the 4". This is in rural VA, prices are very reasonable at the shop. I just look on Gunbroker the price seems excellent.
  8. A local gun shop near me in VA has a beautiful 4" nickel Python for $1700. It looks unfired.

  13. Where I am in VA now people open carry everywhere. You see people at the supermarket, main street, Wal-Mart, the park, etc. It is a way of life here. I personally CCW everywhere except when hiking. I do believe that it is a deterrent. Most people here carry a gun either concealed or open and everyone knows it. We don't have shootings and people are very polite.
  14. I have a 97 Tahoe 4x4 as a beater. I use and abuse it for hunting, hauling trash, going to the range, day to day local driving, etc. My other three vehicles are a newer 4WD truck and a 1968 VW Westfalia Camper. and my wife's Altima. I have always tried to keep a beater car. When I lived in NJ the Tahoe was used for towing my sneakboxes in the winter. This saved a lot of wear and tear on my truck. It fits right in where I live in VA now.
  15. Remington Golden Bullets are the worst 22LR round I have ever used. They do spin in the case. I have had problems using these in semi-auto pistols. I normally use 40gr 22LR for semi-autos. 36gr is hit or miss with my 22's.
  16. I have to respectfully disagree with your post. The woman did nothing to force herself into defending her family. The criminal chose to attempt a carjacking.   17. You must only be thinking about rifle mags. I am willing to buy 15rd pistols mags. Beretta 92 or 96 and Glock 19.
  18. The price of land is very dependent on county out where I am. I found a 32 acre property that has a boundary along the national forest for $79K. Getting ready to make an offer. This land has a stream and is wooded. It will be my hunting/shooting land and is 1hr from my house.
  19. The while area is filled with wineries and microbreweries. A new one just opened in Front Royal across the parking lot from my office. I had lunch there today with my wife. Great food and beer. I have all sorts of wildlife on my property: bears, deer, turkey. I am a county resident so I don't pay any town taxes. My property taxes are 1200/yr for a decent amount of land on the Shenandoah river.
  20. I am in the Northern Shenandoah Valley in VA. We have been here for two years and love it. The only reason I didn't move further is that I need to be able to get to DC occasionally (over 2 1/2 hr commute each way). The area I am in is rural and country. It is great here but if I didn't have to be this close to DC I would be living in TN. I like the eastern part of the state.
  21. I have never found a viable use for the .40. I own two and never shoot them. Will be selling them eventually. Correction, I have three .40's that I never shoot. They will all soon be gone.
  22. I know you limited choices to .357 or 9mm. Personal experience has shown me that a big slow heavy bullet seems to be more effective when putting something down. I really like the .357, but a 45 ACP is my choice for home defense. I know that there are a lot of opinions on this. My daily CCW is a 9mm. My home defense handgun is either 45ACP or 4" barreled .357 with a 158gr JHP (or 12GA or 300BLK AR pistol all are ready to go). I don't think that I need the advantage of high cap 9mm in my house.
