Why not purchase an AR-15, and use a conversion kit, like this one: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=27008/l=y/Product/CMMG_AR_15_M16__22_LR_CONVERSION_KIT

I know that it would be far more expense possibly then just getting a plinker system, but at least you could have the best of both worlds if you opt to use .223/5.56 instead of .22, and vice versa.

The conversion kits do not always function to a degree of satisfaction and the barrel of the standard AR platform is far from suitable for a 22lr. While it is a cheaper route, it isn't close to a dedicated upper.

 

We have numerous examples of dedicated 22lr AR uppers in the club along with a few conversion kits. No one with a conversion kit is very happy. Calling Ceiner's customer service isn't going to help either.

 

I handled the S&W dedicated 22lr AR platform a few days ago. i was impressed. It did feel lighter than the same unit in 5.56 but still nice and reasonably priced. I was surprised to find it cannot be converted to a 5.56 with a change of the upper as the lower is an actual 22lr unit.

Think of it as a cooler looking 10/22 or an alternative to a GSG5

I look at these types of rifles as a middle point between a drop in kit and a dedicated upper. Based on some of the prelim reviews I've read of this thing, it seems like a decent little plinker with the added benefit of being a decent AR training aid. And maybe I'm biased, but, S&W has been putting out some really good products the last few years, and I would hope that this rifle continues down that path.

 

What I'd really like to know is if anyone will have 15 round mags for it

It is lighter than an AR cause the upper and lower are polymer only the receiver, bolt and barrel are metal. S&W said they did this because the pressures of a 22LR are less than a 5.56 and also it is cheaper to make. The argument against the conversion kits is the barrel of an AR is .223 and the 22LR is .22 so the bullet doesn't fully engage the rifling and accuracy is diminished.

 

This rifle is on my short list for the fun factor and it is a Smith.

BA had one it was the noncompliant model so the mag needed a plug and the stock pinned.

TJ has the Colts. After handling both, I prefer the S&W. The Colt has a non working bolt stop/release just for looks. It drove me nuts not being able to lock the carrier back. The S&W is also compatable with AR trigger upgfades, the Colt is not.

trout all the parts are compatible with an AR the only exception is the way the upper/lower mate. They are off by a fraction of an inch so you can't put on a 223 upper/lower. The fire control functions are identical to an AR and the bolt stop does work.

It's not just the stock pinning - there's also no 10 round mags out for it yet supposedly so the mags it comes with would have to get blocked. Not saying it can't be done.. just saying I get why most dealers don't wanna deal with them till the ban-compliant models come out

The bolt stop didn't work on the Colt Tony brought to the range 2 weeks ago. I tried to lock the bolt back as well and it wouldn't. Tony said it didn't function.

The thing with the Colt model is that it's made by an airsoft company.. Umarex or something like that. Colt just allowed them to use the name (at least that's my understanding). Prob why the initial reports on the S&W model seem to be a little better.
