Latest Hearing Protection Suggestions?

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

Looking for suggestions on hearing protection. Mostly for indoor ranges with handguns and some long guns.

Would I need a different set for indoors vs outdoors? Would anyone recommend a particular set of electronic muffs?

Thank you and hope everyone has a good weekend :D I am still waiting for my FID so I figure I might as well get essentials down.

Speaking from a practical K.I.S.S standpoint, the basic 3M plugs they sell at home depot are the best in my opinion.  Plenty of protection while still being able to carry on a conversation.  If you get the 3M plugs plugs, don't forget to lick 'em before you stick 'em.  If shooting something really loud, double up with ear muffs.

or

https://www.etymotic.com/product/etyplugs-high-fidelity-earplugs/ (only 20 dB NRR but less expensive)

and

I'd go with the above Decibullz over the Etymotic though. You don't want to cheap out on ear protection, especially if you're shooting rifle/shotgun calibers indoors. I don't like shooting rifle or shotguns with earmuffs since they get in the way, so below are some other options.

My brother swears by these for shooting with a rifle.

I have these but I don't like the way they fit in my ears:

$130

I have a pair of these on the way at the recommendation of another member:

$300

The decibulls DID NOT work for me. Very unsatisfied with them, had some hearing issues after using them outdoors with a 9mm, thankfully that went away. Could have been my fault, maybe I didn't mold them correctly?

I've been using the silicone ones that look like a power line insulator and have been happy with them. I find them to not be as finicky to get a good fit as the foam style.

Good feedback, it does seem like Decibullz depends a lot on being able to mold it right.

Am curious: Is it silly to wear muffs over electronic plugs?

No it is not silly at all. I believe Massad Ayoob recommends it...

Edit: Whoops, I didn't read the question carefully enough. He recommends foam ear plugs plus ear muffs. I don't know about muffs over electronic plugs.

I was wondering about wearing electronic ear plugs over electronic ear muffs.... I worry that might let in too much sound, and some loud sound might sneak in there...

didn't read the question carefully enough, now the answer is more appropriate

No - but you may not get the benefits of the electronics after being muffled by the regular muffs.  I do electronic muffs over plugs.

Tag I have an interest in this. I was a range instructor my my PD, I wore the peltors but after 10 years of live fire. I do recognize some hearing loss. Some due to age, some do to shotgun and rifle pew pew. any good feedback with in ear systems like surefire or others like it with ear muff combo?

I recently upgraded from Otto Noizebarriers to the 3M Peltor TEP200. The difference is night and day. With the skullscrews ear piece even indoor shooting is transformed. Each shot is reduced to a dull thud.

I'm very impressed, but I guess I should be at the price of them.

    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. This is GM's updated version. it might be  pump gas 10-1 engine The L88 was a aluminum head  cast iron block engine with a nasty solid lifter cam. the  ZL1 was a all aluminum  12 or 13-1 compression ratio engine with the best forged internal parts at the time and had a even nastier solid lifter cam
    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
    • Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
