AntZ 1 Posted June 26, 2009 Thanks for every one's input in the CZ vs Sig thread, as always. I came cross a West Germany made Sig 226 9mm when sig was in VA. There are some rust on the slide near the open and it comes with only one mag. The asking price is little less than $400. I did not look the two letter year code to find out what year it was actually made. Should I stay away from it? I know buying any used one are taking a chance. But I can throw away the money but do not want throw away a permit.
rscalzo 3 Posted June 26, 2009 Wow, that's a classic. Probably back in the days that they were making the BDA for Browning.
Circlesqr 1 Posted June 26, 2009 Nope it's a post-Browning SIG. Remove the slide & check the frame rails for severe wear. Also check the barrel exterior for scalloping. If the frame rails look good & the outside of the barrel is smooth, it's good to go. Don't worry about the surface rust. It's easy to get these pistols refinished if necessary. If it feels good in your hand then buy it. (disclaimer: I'm a SIG guy) --Daniel
Maksim 1,504 Posted June 26, 2009 daniel, you are THE sig guy. lol. not a sig guy.
wsl 2 Posted June 26, 2009 lol yeah Daniel, THE is always in caps with you when it comes with sigs. I need a crip sheet on proper cleaning/greasing as soon as my p229 comes in, whenever that is. Then i'll start workin on Milton for the sig556 If it feels good in your hand then buy it. I think those that SIG's don't feel comfortable in their hands, buy glocks... matty 810 Posted June 26, 2009 I am happy with my was NIB P226 (a Daniel influenced purchase as well) and have shot a P228, Sig 1911 and SigPro as rentals, forget the model but they were all 9mm except the 1911 of course. All very nice, I prefer them to the brick-like feel (to me) of the Glocks. The Sig board guys have a hardcore group the believe the only real Sig is a 100% German made one. Not sure if I am going to buy another person's problem. Maybe I just ask if I can shoot it before I buy it.
Circlesqr 1 Posted June 26, 2009 I was concerned before I bought my first used gun so I asked my Grandfather about it. (He's a retired NYC detective and a man of great wisdom.) In between thoughtful puffs of a cigar he asked me, "Was your wife new when you married her?" So go ahead and buy a used gun. If it's a SIG the previous owner probably just broke it in for you. --Daniel

Never and issue, and I honestly think it is good to give them a good home. Kind of like picking up a dog at the pound or shelter.
Circlesqr 1 Posted June 26, 2009 Some of the best dogs I've ever owned have come from a Rescue Group or a Shelter. We got one old shelter b*tch who was 16 years old & she lived to 24 years! Tough as nails but sweet with the kids. Definitely a great dog. Had another Rescue dog who would bite my wife every time she did something stupid. Yes, the dog was very busy! The only thing I don't buy used is beer. Now, there's another quote for ya! --Daniel
AntZ 1 Posted June 26, 2009 "Was your wife new when you married her?" There is a difference: You don't need to beg your friends to be listed as references and wait for months to get a permit to get a wife.
rauchman 3 Posted June 26, 2009 Wow, grab that pistol!!! Pre NH manufacter Sigs didn't have the best finish, so the rust isn't all that uncommon. But as others have mentioned here, you can have it refinished in a variety of finishes. My P226 (German not West German) was purchased used and have had no problems. I did send it off to Sigarms and they changed out all the springs and what not. The pistol is one of my fav's. Arguably, the best of the metal framed DA/SA high cap 9mm's. rscalzo 3 Posted June 26, 2009 I wouldn't send it back to Sig for refinishing. It would probably take some time to complete.

Ray Ray 3,566 Posted June 27, 2009 I got my hands on a Sig P229 in 40 that was made in Germany and I love it! The previous owner was a retired cop and he only trusted two handguns with his life, Sigs and Colts. When I would go to him for advice or pick his brain about guns, he would always respond, "Ray, it's not a Sig or Colt, so I won't recommend it."
