About to move to New Jersey, initial questions

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm moving to New Jersey this summer...I'm more than a bit confused about the gun laws in your state. Will I be all right brining guns into the state? I don't own any assault rifles, mostly single shot revolvers and a selection of rifles.

Here is my question. My wife and I will only live in New Jersey for 2 years. Would I be allowed to use my guns in NJ if I keep my drivers license in Illinois, which would be legitimate as we are keeping our house here in Chicago. In other words, how do the laws treat out of state residents?

Thanks,

Kevin

Usual disclaimer: IANAL

Not sure that keeping your IL license would be "legitimate" since it is not your primary residence. If you intend to apply for a NJ FPID card, the address on your DL must match that of your FPID card. Most states give you a 90 day grace period for changing things like your DL and vehicle registrations. If there is any question on a law's interpretation, keep in mind that NJ uses the strict definition - which means you don't have room to slide.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

If you bring firearms to NJ as a resident, you don't have to do anything (no registration required). However, if you are going to live here that long, I'd suggest applying for a NJ FID. Some uninformed cops may assume that if you don't have one, you are in guilty of unlawful possession.

In fact, under NJ law, everyone is guilty until proven innocent, by proving that they fall under the exemption categories. In your case, you could be expected to prove that you purchased your firearms legally as a resident of another state.

Thanks for the info. About the FID, do they really want two references? As we are moving from out of state, I don't know anyone in NJ. It seems like a really strange requirement for the application.

With over 700 members, you now know a few people in NJ...
