Bob D 0 Posted January 30, 2011 Hello, I have an 1873 Springfield Trapdoor Carbine serial # 73742. The date of manufacture, according to a few lists, is Oct - Dec 1876. The list also shows that only 2 Carbines were manufactured that year. Could this be correct, and might this Carbine be rare? My link
XDJohnTact 49 Posted January 30, 2011 Could be?

Pizza Bob 1,488 Posted January 30, 2011 I know little about Trapdoors, but I am wondering if the same thing exists with them as it does with Krags - that is, the carbines are much rarer, therefore much more valuable. There are an awful lot of counterfeit carbines out there, made from cutdown rifles. Could this be the case with your Trapdoor. Dixie Gunworks once tried to corner the market on Trapdoors. You used to be able to buy them for about $15 bucks and Dixie bought every one that came available and openly solicited for more. I remember pictures of trapdoors, stacked on pallets like cordwood, in Dixie's warehouse. They may be authorities. In the meantime I'll query my friend, who is far more Trapdoor knowledgeable than I. Pictures would help. Adios, Pizza Bob
Bob D 0 Posted January 31, 2011 I’ve attached some pics of the 1873 Springfield Trapdoor Carbine. Not much history though, as I inherited from my Dad when he recently passed away. Don’t know how or where he got it. It looks like the sights and the Breech Block have been updated. Thanks for any additional info that anyone can provide.
