torn lower bicep....WTF!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, just had my MRI and todays Dr visit to find out I may have a torn bicep. Just in time for summer....WTF!! I need to see a hand/wrist & elbow specialist bc my Dr wants to make sure its seriously f**ked up. I guess age is finally kicking in. What the hell am I gonna do ONE HANDED? Looks like im gonna need to shoot revolvers in my spare time.

How do I go about preparing for this? Dressing, showering, tieing shoes, etc. He mentioned a possible 4-5 inch cut down my arm from the inside bicep to the outside forearm. Im bummed!

Dude! Stop being all diesel and stuff and you won't have to worry about that stuff! sorry. sounds like it sucks. but man, you're going to be awesome shooting one handed, not to mention learning to load and sh*t. send vids! oh....flip flops FTW. and running pants...no zippers.

Well thats not good: but you comment on what are you going to do 1 handed, well I won't comment on your choice of words.:sarcastichand:

I will say, you will probably have some physical therapy in your future. I did when I not just broke my Humorous (really not funny) but I turned it into dust, shattered the crap out of it. Took replacement of the bone (used coral I am at one with the sea) and 2 plates and a bunch of screws. Now back to the physical therapy, I don't care if they tell you to rub a marble with each finger in a figure 8 of a table top, doesn't matter how stupid an exercises sounds there is a purpose to it and if you don't do it it you won't ever be 100%. Don't over do it, and understand healing from an injury takes time.

On the other side of the coin, you will learn how to do things 1 handed, if it's your strong hand it's easier to learn, if not it will be slower, but try and look at after you learn you will be just that much better doing things with your weak hand.

Good luck and sorry to hear about your injury.

Harry

Speaking as someone who just recovered from being restrictd for 6 months and not being able to walk for 2 of those months, just one arm is not that bad. Yeah it sucks and the nice weather is coming but it could be a hell of a lot worse and painful. I wish you a speedy recovery.

We had a guy last year in KM class during some sparring that blew out his bicep from nothing special. It was bizarre how all the muscle bunched up once the tendons tore loose. The Doc's told him it was from not stretching enough...I was like WTF and took my stretching a lot more seriously after that.

Although I am very concerned about your condition, and wish you the best outcome, I hope you are not one of those guys that loses a pinky or toe and decides to give up because life has come to an end. I once heard anything like that can "throw your balance off" of something and you become useless. Actually, I heard that more than once.

The guy thinks he won't be able to shower or tie his shoes. Or shoot a gun.

Cagefighter - The worst problems in life are underdefined chronic problems like this that take time to try to fix. I'm pulling for you, bro. Nobody wants to get messed up. Worst case scenario, this is not going to make you unable to shoot or tie your shoes. That is rediculous. I appreciate you sharing your concerns and fears, but you gotta realize that you are panicking a bit. Everything will be OK unless you are on the USA Olympic Team. I'm sure you'll review your options in detail and take decisive action and come out on top no matter what they throw at you. Good luck and God Bless.

Stretching can really work wonders. Aside from preventing serious injuries, it helps get blood circulating more. You will also notice a HUGE improvement in how you feel right after, and a while after any workout if you stretch properly.

"Or shoot a gun", -lol. ...You mean LOAD a gun. (Note to self, must load & make ready BOTH pistols b4 surgery bc I wont be able to pull slide back w/ a bum arm). :nono:

Arrr, be a man and use your teeth to chomp down on that slide and rack it...only once though, gums can't grip squat after all the teef are on the floor.

All kidding aside, we do a number of one armed drills with our pistols and AR's to keep us in the fight. If you ever need some instruction on it, PM me and I can try to walk you thru some of it. It isn't as bad as you might think to do. Once you learn some of the steps you have a few ah-ha moments and will do just fine.

I agree, getting even minor surgery isn't fun at all. I had my knee cleaned out arthroscopically. I still have a partially torn ACL, but I also have some bad days with my knee. I also have two partially torn tendons in my rotators cuff, and pretty much refuse to get cut open unless I have to. It's just not a fun experience. Alex, I wish you good luck, and a speedy and painless recovery. Make sure you do whatever the physical therapist says.

My knee was done twice. i didnt really worry about that bc it wasnt too bad. With my arm, the tendon is ripped off the bone, and they need to re-attach it. its more complex than my knee. big scar, one permanent screw and prob ALOT of recovery pain. not looking forward to 7:20 on Mon am.

Don't worry about the screw, I got a few plates (in the arm guy's not the head) and a bunch of screws and whatnot, replace the bone that I turned to sawdust with coral and I'm fine now (again don't ask the wife). Like has been said it's not 20 or 30+ years ago where this may be a problems, they do wonders with these things today and as long as you do everything the Dr says and EVERYTHING in PT you will be fine. If you were in good shape before this it will only help the recuperation time and how well you come back to the way you were. If you work out, you may find that you aren't up to full strength even after PT and full healing, this is the time to focus on support muscle groups to help out, over time you can should be able to be back at 100% if not better with the additional focus of different muscle groups that you may have neglected in the past.

Remember there is a bright side or a positive to most things, it's all how you look at them.

Oh, and the screw won't go off at the airport if you were wondering. :)
