Proposed New Jersey gun bill will add a 5% sales tax on top of the current 7% sales tax on all guns and ammunition

Recommended Posts

TRENTON — A New Jersey assemblywoman has introduced a bill that would add an extra 5 percent sales tax on guns and ammunition.

The money would fund safety improvements to public buildings.

“Since the incident in Newtown, you start to listen to people. I’m listening to students, I’m listening to educators, I’m listening to everybody,” said Assemblywoman Connie Wagner (D-Bergen). “I think the first thing has to be to take caereof our infrastructure. then comes up the second question, well how are we going to pay for this?”

Under the bill (A3727), gun purchasers would pay the extra sales tax on top of the current 7 percent sales tax.

The money would go into a “Safety Tax Fund” that would pay for things like security cameras, electronic emergency notification systems, devices controlling entrances, panic buttons and doors that can only be locked from inside.

Even though the bill defines a public building as anything from a school to a movie theater, Wagner said she plans to amend the bill so that it only applies to publicly-owned buildings.

Wayne Viden, co-owner of Bob’s Little Sports Shop in Glassboro, said gun buyers already have to pay a $15 fee plus sales tax for a background check. In addition, there are fees for firearms purchaser ID cards and a handgun purchase permit.

“I think they just want to charge more money for guns to try to discourage people from buying them,” Viden said. “There are so many useless taxes they have that they don’t use the money correctly for, what guarantee is there they’re going to use this correctly?”

“I look at this just as a tax on alcohol or as a tax on cigarettes,” said Wagner. “I you want to use ammunition or purchase a gun I don’t think a 5 percent sales tax is much to ask for to provide for infrastructure improvement.”

Wagner’s bill is about one of about two dozen that New Jersey Democrats have introduced in the aftermath of last month’s Newtown, Conn., elementary school tragedy. Gov. Chris Chrisite, a Republican, in July said New Jersey’s gun laws are sufficient. Thursday, Christie said he will create a task force to address violence in New Jersey.

Texas is starting to look better and better.

My in-laws retired there 5 years and loved it. If I wasn't locked in Jersey with work and an upside down house I would move there. Every time i go there i always have a good time. Great gun shows.

News roundup: Texas invites New York gun owners to move

Published on Jan 18, 2013 07:40AM

Texas invites New Yorkers.

Happy Friday. In the wake of new gun legislation in New York state, the Texas attorney general has a new pitch: Come on down! While New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed into law earlier this week legislation that bars assault rifles and high-capacity magazines, Texas has no such restrictions.

-> The pitch from Texas: "WANTED: Law abiding New York gun owners seeking lower taxes and greater opportunities." [Reuters]

Texas is starting to look better and better.

NY company I used to work for opened a Texas office and transferred several people. A few years later, they decided to close the office and move everyone back to NY. Nobody took them up on it -- they all found jobs in Texas.

Agreed. We can't win by always staying on defense.

I'm starting to think that no Internet sales of ammo is in reality, to generate tax revenue.

Think about it. There is a big economy working its wheels, without paying tax money....Government wants its cut.

You're supposed to pay tax on out of state and online purchases you bring back into the state.

Its always about money, and dont forget, tax the evil video games, funny how little of that money goes to the original problem, think taxes on smoking, and every promotion Ive seen for a global warming tax says 10% raised could go towards fixing the "problem" and the rest to the general fund, thats enough to warm the heart of any liberal!

Lets not forget this pro tax governor made a deal with the devil, we will all be paying a new tax soon, the amazon tax, as they will be building in nj to legally tax us all, a really bad deal for all in exchange for a very few jobs, and this guy pretends to not be a democrat, oh and they get tax breaks for building here.

FYI, if you aren't paying the 7% use tax on amazon purchaes you are breaking the law.... That said, its Christie's fault amazon is coming here and will require you to pay the tax that you already owe?

A couple jobs are coming but we have to follow the law now, and that's bad? That logic is just as asinine as the antis.

The problem with tax lovers like yourself is that it hurts the majority, while enriching the few. There is never enough tax to satisfy you, there are states that do without sales tax, some states do without other taxes, the problem with liberals like you its never enough, youve already spent it before its come in, if taxes were the answer how come every new revenue stream finds us further behind? We have casinos, the lotteries (50 plus scratch offs), etc., and we just keep getting further behind. Asinine is being held hostage by public union scum, still want to play?

You do realize you just called probably the most radical libertarian on this forum a a "tax loving liberal?"

Complaining that you will be forced to pay the tax you already owe because amazon is coming to nj is akin to complaining that you got pulled over for doing 70 on the turnpike.

If I got pulled over for doing 70 on the turnpike or parkway I would be cited for not keeping up with the rest of the traffic.

No, you would be cited for speeding. Just because everyone else is speeding too, or everyone else is evading taxes, does not make it legal or correct.

why do you hate Christie and make crap up? Amazon has about HUNDREDS of jobs...and its not JUST with them. The facts will never lie, companies around that place will hire more, delis, stores etc...it all will add to the economy.

Be realistic here...there are NO Texas conservatives in NJ...republicans here are middle roads or liberals anywhere else..they have to be, otherwise they would be wiped out as unelectable. They temper the nut job liberals every day and you don't have any respect for that?

The tax breaks you are mad about truly show that you have no idea how the tax system works in relation to abatements.

If a town or state grants an abatement on property for instyance , which IS the case with the Amazon distribution wh, the TOWN gets $$$$...

here is how the property tax GENERALLY breaks down in NJ:

you pay $100 in tax. (my town in ()

of the $100:

schools get up to 70% of that (60%)

your town gets 15-20% (25%)

the county gets the rest, ranges from 15-20% (15%)

when you do an abatement, it can be a 5-20 year abatement.

They will amortize the tax payments over a period of time to the end of the abatement program

Typically in NJ it's over 5 or 10 years:

example will be 5 years, assessed taxes of 100k yearly

1st year, they pay 20% of their assessed taxes...they goes almost exclusively to the town with a small amount to the county. town gets $20k

2nd year they pay 40%of their assessed taxes...they goes almost exclusively to the town with a small amount to the county. town gets $40k

3rd year, they pay 20% of their assessed taxes...they goes almost exclusively to the town with a small amount to the county. town gets $60k

4th year they pay 40%of their assessed taxes...they goes almost exclusively to the town with a small amount to the county. town gets $80k

now to date this has ALL gone almost exclusively to the town's coffers. They got $200k in abatement taxes

This is a no cost program essentially....and if they do not create a system that requires this extra $ every year...its gravy $...pay off the debt, infrastructure improvements, new equipment such as fire trucks or large 1 time items like recreation fields etc....

This $ has NO cost to the tax payer or any loss of assessed value to anyone.

year 5 is a big change, the abatement expires when the taxes become payable to 100%. Now here is what happens, (using the % above on the tax):

school gets 70% or $70K

Town gets 15% or $15K HUGE DROP

County gets 15% or $15k

Now you'd think that this means that school taxes go down right?

wrong.

The method used to calculate taxes is based on overall valuation of everything in the town.

With the 2% cap, schools will just automatically add a 2% increase every year, so school taxes have already gone up 10% in the 5 years. Now with the extra valuation from the abatement expiration, they get a huge boost...$70k here, which then will go straight into the NJEA union contract with little or no effects in productivity...and then from there on, it only grows

The hope that the added business would add to the desirability and job market...bringing in more jobs and an upward spiral...

most who have no clue will say that the rich get freebies, the state gives it away and Christie is making us pay for Amazon....

you want to protest this abatement? demand it be a 20 year one....
