Publicity we DO NOT need...

This is what happens when you heckle a woman...

"Throughout the two-hour hearing, only a few expressed anti-gun opinions. A representative of One Million Moms Against Gun Control made a comment against allowing school personnel to carry guns in school but was heckled by the pro-gun crowd, which prompted an admonishment from the task force's co-chairman, Peter G. Verniero. She left the meeting, accompanied by police escort."

Reporting "fact", and "accuracy" has gone the way of the dodo. Now it's simply about trying to get the "story"out there first, truth be damned.

Of course, they cherry picked this lapse of judgement by the hecklers, and provided no good statements made by anyone against proposed legislation.

"A tearful mother held the room in rapt attention as she read a statement about her fear that her mentally ill son will hurt someone -- as he had already assaulted his own parents. She explained how her son had been in the care of nine psychiatrists since the age of 7, but needs help in his adult stage of his life. "My message has been consistent. He is capable of violence," she said. "It's been suggested to us to 'let him hit bottom,'" she said, to gasps in the crowd. She said sadly, "Some violence is inevitable."

Ok, so how can any reasonable person see that this is NOT A GUN CONTROL ISSUE? This person could just as easily use any other weapon to inflict violence. Are violent acts committed using other methods any less tragic?

Tough T!tty, she should get her big Girl panties on. She overreacted and got all drama-queeny for the express purpose of generating sympathy. My wife thinks she was a plant for that reason, so not all women are buying the Drama Llama.

My wife doesn't disagree, however, we don't need to convince our wives to agree. We need to convince the OTHER wives, who are buying the drama llama, and they are out there. There are plenty of them, who don't think for themselves, and who react emotionally. We need them on our side, and heckling one of their own doesn't help.

So you think the smart move was to play to that drama, or just pretend she doesn't exist so she and the media had nothing to **** about?

There was NO reason for the booing, it was in poor form and did not help out point at all. You can not act that way in the world we live in and get away with it. Smarten up or it makes all of us look bad.

Did you not see the link to the Red Bank patch? I pulled this off the Local News section from AOL's home page. So basically anyone in the area of zip code 07701 has access to the article.

Folks, you are in a fight, the other side wants to take you down to 5 round magazines, they want to squash your right, and your still thinking if you use your best behavior they will go away? Be ill-mannered on your feet, or prepare to live on your knees.

Sorry that cow manure. This fight is ALL about perception. It is ALL about public opinion. Stand there beating your chest screaming "shall not be infringed" and we will lose. I'm not saying don't make your points strongly, but we are already being painted as uneducated rednecks and that plays well in the media. How about we don't give them validation?

I agree -- it's best to behave like one is appearing in court or appearing for a job interview.

But speaking of "drama llamas" ...

Rev. Kevin Nunn of the The Asbury Park Neptune Ministerial Alliance pleaded for help from the many government and police officials in the room to rid his neighborhood streets of guns, including AK-47s and even grenades. "I will tell you that as a pastor I’ve buried more children in past two years I could ever think of burying," he said. "My question is, is there anyone I can speak to in this room who is willing to help us to get these guns off the street?"

There aren't any hand grenades being used for murders in Asbury Park, and I doubt there are any AK-47s, either. The latest annual Asbury Park murder statistic that I could find was a total of 4 (four). Since it's become gentrified, a bigger problem is finding parking spaces close to the boardwalk.

Until Superstorm Sandy, I preferred the OG boardwalk for my daily 5K -- but that's because the parking is metered and I don't enjoy being panhandled, not because I worried about being shot by a gangster with an AK.

THIS, however, is closer to the essence of the problem:

Several people expressed their concern about the state's responsibility to care for the mentally ill, especially in the face of tighter budgets, changes in Medicare, and the closure of Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital in 1998 and Hagedorn Psychiatric Hospital in Glen Gardner in 2012.

A tearful mother held the room in rapt attention as she read a statement about her fear that her mentally ill son will hurt someone -- as he had already assaulted his own parents. She explained how her son had been in the care of nine psychiatrists since the age of 7, but needs help in his adult stage of his life. "My message has been consistent. Let me ask you this.

Shouting down and heckling a woman who just testified that she wants to protect her children A) helps us or B) hurts us.

I never said any such thing, so don't suppose you know what I am advocating or not. I could easily strawman you back that you are too easily swayed by what other people may think, and are rolling over based on emotion. As the NRA prez said last week or something--Civility is only for us, not for them--when referring to our enemies--yes, she is an ENEMY of gun rights. Would have been better if the booing never happened, but I am not gonna get too upset about it. After being called a killer, moron, brainless, savage, and all sorts of other names in the media the last few weeks, I don't have much sympathy for drama queens.

So you think the smart move was to play to that drama, or just pretend she doesn't exist so she and the media had nothing to **** about?

As usual, the article isn't even accurate. First, I wouldn't call it "heckled", it was more of some gasps. It wasn't after she said she was against "armed guards in school", it was after she lied when she blamed the NRA for the, paraphrasing here, proliferation of easy guns on the streets. After that ridiculous comment, a few people gasped and groaned at such nonsense.

We'll have to agree to disagree about whether or not it was heckling, however, you are correct about when it took place. What doesn't help is that one of the co-chairs had to respond to it.

It was the only blemish on what was a very positive meeting for us, and as it would be, it is the only thing that really stands out in the news article.

This woman went to this hearing very well armed, her magazine had emotion, she used it, and while some may have tried to respond to the threat, the rest where like deer in the headlights. Sounds like she gets in more range time than the gentlemen.

This makes no sense... you're saying she was effective because she used emotion, fear and lies. And you think we should as well... And then insult people for taking the high road with our activism.

Do me a favor and stay home out of the snow and rain tomorrow.
