whiteout 0 Posted February 19, 2013 I'm going to throw my two cents worth. Had a nice conversation with the woman. I bought up some of my concerns pertaining to ammo sales. I kept it civil, did not tip my hands as to how i was leaning. She stated the assembleywomans position. When i mentioned nicely the governor and their lack of a supermajority, she groaned and said i had obviously studying this well. I got a strong vibe that they already know how this is going to play out which is: THey push forth the bills 2) Christie does not sign off, but instead sets up a "task force" 3) with no supermajority, the bills die 4) The task force is window dressing, they do nothing and accomplish nothing 5) Christie looks like he did something on gun violence, but he does not. THis way he can state when he runs for prez that he set up a task force, but he will not had a bad rep with republican pro gun owners.
treydub 0 Posted February 19, 2013 I'm just curious, how you came to the conclusion they won't have a supermajority?
whiteout 0 Posted February 19, 2013 I'm just curious, how you came to the conclusion they won't have a supermajority? Several offices both repub and dems have confirmed they do not have supermajority. With this one call, even one of the head zealots immediately admitted they do not have it. When i mentioned supermajority, the wind went right out of her sails. She also stated that the governors answer to this is "task force". sounds like they already know which way the fat man is leaning.
wooly bugger 1 Posted February 19, 2013 So if I'm following you, you're predicting this works out for us, because he'll blame the task force for not telling him to sign? (sorry, I'm dense.) Can you give us a better feeling for the "vibe" you received? As much as I want to say, fight 100% or everything, I do think we need to prioritize our efforts and will have to throw them a couple of bones. This and the 5 year renewal are my biggest bugaboos. With the 10 or 5 round, as I'd mentioned before, there are many grandfathers born every day, and I doubt 5 round will pass constitutional scrutiny. Home inspection .... hilarity ensues with the ACLU tying itself into knots about how to destroy the 2nd without taking down the 4th.

It's a fig leaf, but it could shield him either way. What if he says, "I really wanted to veto these laws, but the people have spoken!" No doubt the task force is a joke. At the Newark meeting, half the members were AWOL, and almost everyone agreed that underlying societal problems were the real issue. Hell, even Corey Booker is saying that on national TV. I look forward to seeing the task force report.

They might be instructed to "leak" this information to let your guard down and take the wind out of peoples' sails. "Hey, you don't have a supermajority." "We don't have a supermajority." "Nice! Time to go write about it on the internet so other people think there's no work left to be done!"
siderman 1,138 Posted February 19, 2013 If this crap gets to the gov's desk he needs to veto it, it will not just die. If its not signed or vetoed after 45 days-it lives

He gives the impression he is serious on this issue, but then he keeps pro gunners happy when the task force does nothing. In fact, i would be willing to bet, the task force is told by him, don't get anything done. The governor's phone line answer is "task force".

She sounded very possitive and upbeat, then when i mentioned supermajority, she sounded defeated. She then mentioned the task force

MeanderingCuban 8 Posted February 20, 2013 Do not let your guard down for one second. Why would democratic reps tell you that they do not have supermajority? In other words why would they show any weakness? This and their other distractions are a way to get us to let our guard down. This to me smells like a plan to get us to cool off and then they will spring all the laws on us. Do not cool off or be distracted by what they tell you, it's simply a strategy to distract us. It worked for Castro....

Handyman 5,682 Posted February 20, 2013 Is anyone else horrificly terrified that we have to depend on one man - Christie - to bail us out? Someday - fairly soon, in the grand scheme of things - we will have a democrat governor. If we can't effect major change before then we will be in for a world of hurt. Vlad G 345 Posted February 20, 2013 Is anyone else horrificly terrified that we have to depend on one man - Christie - to bail us out? Well there are always options, from moving to political revolt to civil disobedience to many other things. But they depend on us to take those steps. Someday - fairly soon, in the grand scheme of things - we will have a democrat governor. If we can't effect major change before then we will be in for a world of hurt. There are other states, and there are pro-gun democrats. Not many, but they exist.

I think we are going to be spared of this for the time being, but you are correct. WHen the fat man, and i say this in an endearing way, is gone, we are done for. I envision NJ at that point in time having measures put forth and voted in that make NY look tame.
Bob2222 317 Posted February 20, 2013 Two republican offices confirmed they do not have it. One aide chuckled as he told me. Then is there some point to this kabuki theater? (Besides damaging Christie. And avoiding talking about fixing any of the multitude of real New Jersey problems. And I answer my own question.) I think we are going to be spared of this for the time being, but you are correct. WHen the fat man, and i say this in an endearing way, is gone, we are done for. I envision NJ at that point in time having measures put forth and voted in that make NY look tame. At least with almost 5 more years of a Republican governor, either the "S" will hit the fan -- and 50.1% of NJ voters will begin to understand some of the reasons that access to firearms is important (okay, maybe that's not likely -- although I had thought that pretty much everyone in NJ had a pistol and 1 box of ammo in their sock drawer after the 1967 riots.) OR we'll have the time to move to a less socialistic, lower taxed and more 2A friendly state.
Amy 0 Posted February 21, 2013 Just received this email this morning from our illustrious Governor: Office of the Governor Office of Constituent Relations Post Office Box 001 Trenton, New Jersey 08625-0001 GOVERNOR CHRIS CHRISTIE ELECTRONIC RESPONSE February 20, 2013 Dear Friend: Thank you for writing to express your opposition to new laws regarding gun control. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue. Acting on my commitment to take a full and comprehensive look at the intersection of gun control, addiction, mental health and school safety in New Jersey, I have created the NJ SAFE Task Force. The Task Force will be chaired by two former attorneys general of New Jersey and members who have expertise in the fields of mental health diagnosis and treatment, addiction services and treatment, law enforcement and school safety. Violence in our society has never been solely about firearms, and we would miss an opportunity to better prevent the roots of violence if we didn't look at the complete picture. If we are truly going to take an honest and candid assessment of violence and public safety, we have to look more deeply at the underlying causes of many acts of violence. That means removing the stigma and evaluating issues of mental health, addiction, prevention and treatment services alongside the effectiveness of our firearms laws, enforcement mechanisms and our school safety measures. This task force will convene immediately and report back with its findings. My commitment has always been to evaluate public safety, criminal policy and behavioral science with an approach that recognizes that these issues cannot be separated from one another. The SAFE Task Force will further my commitment in that regard as we look at how we can better guarantee violence control. I hope you find this information helpful. Thank you again for writing. Sincerely, Chris Christie Governor

Hopefully by that time, SCOTUS will rule that the magazines and firearms "in common use" will apply and maybe we would actually be able to have 30 rounders by then, Only tme will tell. Bob2222 317 Posted February 21, 2013 I think what Sweeney would want to do is embarrass Christie to prevent a bloodbath in the November elections and the question for him is how should he best do it. He might wait until Christie's task force gives it's recommendations, but then write a Senate bill or bills that claim to modify the Assembly bills and give Christie what he asks for, but write the bills in such a way that he has to veto them. Of course if they haven't sent him final bills by the time his task force generates its report, Christie can always appoint another task force! Wash, rinse, repeat until November..... --> "Gov. Christie's job approval highest for any governor in 17 years" http://newjersey.new...years-1.4678156
