Recommended Posts

RIP.  NJ loses another hero. The cowards could not fight him straight up they had to sneak attack. Lets just level the place and be done with it !!

RIP Sgt. McGill. Thank you for your service to this country.

I say let them kill eachother and get our men back home.

+1 I agreed with going in and killing the bastards that murdered our people.I still do but we should not go beyond our bases trying to nation build.

Freedom has to be earned and they show no will or desire to pay the cost. Let them suffer the fate they choose.

RIP Sergeant.. Never to be Forgotten

From my days in the Cavalry

Fiddlers' Green

Halfway down the trail to Hell,

In a shady meadow green

Are the Souls of all dead troopers camped,

Near a good old-time canteen.

And this eternal resting place

Is known as Fiddlers' Green.

Marching past, straight through to Hell

The Infantry are seen.

Accompanied by the Engineers,

Artillery and Marines,

For none but the shades of Cavalrymen

Dismount at Fiddlers' Green.

Though some go curving down the trail

To seek a warmer scene.

No trooper ever gets to Hell

Ere he's emptied his canteen.

And so rides back to drink again

With friends at Fiddlers' Green.

And so when man and horse go down

Beneath a saber keen,

Or in a roaring charge of fierce melee

You stop a bullet clean,

And the hostiles come to get your scalp,

Just empty your canteen,

And put your pistol to your head

And go to Fiddlers' Green.

Update on the services...

I talked to a few of my friends who are on the Ramsey fire department.  They are helping with the coming home ceremony for Army Staff Sgt. Timothy McGill.

Unfortunately, my small town in Bergen County has experience with fallen servicemen.

As of now, details are foggy as to when Army Staff Sgt. Timothy McGill will be arriving, due to international flights and the NJ Tpke traffic issues, but it's looking like early afternoon on Monday, Sept. 30.  There will be a memorial procession down the main street of town (aptly named "Main St.").  The wake will be on Tuesday, and I'm assuming that it will be at the Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home, 109 Darlington Avenue, Ramsey, NJ 07446.

Burial services will be on Wednesday, location unknown.  None of this is etched in stone, but I trust my friends who will be in full dress those days.

On Monday I'll be there with my my wife to view the procession, and we're taking our girls out of school early to bring them as well.  Please, if you have the time, and if you're close, attend as well.  It may be a good experience for your kids as well.

I was able to make it to the funeral today, chaperoning a group of my students from the high school I work at in Ramsey (Catholic, not public).  My relatively small town, which still retains much of the small town qualities, has now experienced three combat deaths of our sons in the past three years.  Too many.

Staff Sergeant Timothy McGill initially enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 2001.  He served with distinction in Iraq, and after being discharged he signed on with the Army National Guard where he was assigned to the 1st Group Special Forces.  He ultimately was deployed to Afghanistan as a Green Beret in 2011.

He was posthumously presented with the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

I have attended funeral services for fallen firefighters from 9/11, and friends of the family who were law enforcement.  At 43 years old, this was my first military funeral.  And I am glad that I was there, not for the circumstances, but for the renewal of the knowledge that the men and women who risk and sacrifice all for our country are our next door neighbors, our former students (in my case), the father or mother of the the little kid on your child's soccer team.

The students that I had with me were respectfully awestruck at the show of support that the USMC, the US Army, the USAF, the USN, the Ramsey FD, the Ramsey Public Works, and the public attendees showed.  As was I.  Not many things humble me, but today was one of them.

I bumped into a few of my former students, who were classmates of Tim McGill when I worked at the high school many years ago.  I thought that it shouldn't take a tragedy such as this to bring us back together.  My 8 and 6 year old girls did not go to the ceremony, but many of the teachers in their elementary school did, since Tim was "one of their's."

Sorry for the rambling, but I know that many of you have been through this once, twice, many times.

And for those of you who have served, or are active, from my family and me, thank you, be safe, and God Bless.

And to Staff Sergeant Timothy McGill, Godspeed.
