What mode Remington 700 as a base rifle and a few other ???

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering what's the best starting point for a Remington 700 and where you go from there. Let's assume you want a nice base rifle but want to eventually upgrade to something with a detachable mag because why not.

Then if you wanted a nicer stock what's the difference between something like the new magpul vs the AI chassis in accuracy

seems like if you are looking at the available 20+" 308s there are the SPS tactical 20" for less than $600, a 700p 26" for just under $1k and the 5R 20" for just under $1200.  i guess I'm wondering what the difference is if you plan on replacing the stock anyways.

and whats the advantages and disadvantages of a bedded stock vs one of the bolt in chassis systems?

I plan to shoot out to a 1,000 Yards this season. This video does an excellent job explaining why I need it.

That totally explains it.  No need to watch the video.  So few people shoot at that distance.  I totally understand. Sure 308 is going to make the trip?

How many grains?

Yes .

I will be using 175 Grain bullets, The 168 Grain bullets goes Transonic at about 700-750 yards and have an unpredictable trajectory after that. With a Remington SPS Varmint with a 1:12 twist the 175 Grain bullets will be stable enough to get out to 1K yards

Plenty of good reading in a book called : Accuracy and Precision for Long Range Shooting by Bryan Litz

buy the time your done getting a 700 a scope base, trigger and stock you could just buy a tuned Kimber 8400 they are worked, bedded, the bolt has work, trigger is sweet mine is 3lbs and worked at the factory and tested to .5 moa before shipping in a Pelican case. Then get a SWFA scope with TPS rings and be done with it and have a rifle capable of .5 MOA out the box! I just went threw the same research process as you are doing and if you have the money up front this is the way to go. Just an other way to look at it. its still way cheaper then a custom gun.
