zebra007 7 Posted January 13, 2016 Are there any tax write off's for gun owners? specifically non law enforcement I believe if you were training for a new career, expenses such as classes, training, club memberships, specialized equipment can be written off. If you were training for possibly a change in careers or a part time job as an armed guard would this still apply? I'll be checking with my accountant next month, but does anyone have first hand knowledge of this?
Displaced Texan 11,785 Posted January 13, 2016 I seriously doubt it, but I too would be interested to know.
Howard 538 Posted January 13, 2016 Well I would imagine if you bought the gun to protect your business you could claim the cost of the gun, ammo and accessories as normal business expenses.
ted527 21 Posted January 13, 2016 If you are an armed guard you could probably claim firearms and training, just like a construction worker can claim steel toe work boots
zebra007 7 Posted January 13, 2016 After some quick looking it seems deductions need to improve and develop current job-related skills. Still going to do more checking
mipafox 438 Posted January 13, 2016 Generally speaking, it has to be job-specific education related or it hs to be business use only. I cannot deduct suits, or even work boots. Jersey does, however, have a tax advantage with respect to firearms. Jail is not considered a taxable benefit.
WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot 358 Posted January 13, 2016 A joint visit from IRS and BATFE agents would be a wonderful thing...
JackDaWack 2,895 Posted January 13, 2016 Yeah, even if they did I wouldnt file any deductions.... IRS is SHADY.
Zeke 5,504 Posted January 13, 2016 I would imagine a gun rental would write off as tooling. Employed persons lack the whole spectra of write offs.
Zeke 5,504 Posted January 13, 2016 Another point The classic-" well it's a write off you " You are only saving the taxable % of said item. Not 100% It is unwise to spend $100 to save $

gleninjersey 2,144 Posted January 14, 2016 You made money, the govermnet took (taxed) some of it, you purchased a firearm with what you kept. The part the governmnet took. Write it off. Fagedabout it. You ain't never getting that back. Hope.that helps.
mipafox 438 Posted January 14, 2016 Work apparel? I've never had to buy uniforms. But my accoutant has poo-poo'd suits, dry cleaning, and steel toe work boots, and showed me why it was not allowed at the time.

Yep. I've been told the same. If the clothing couldn't be worn for other occasions, you could write off the dry cleaning, but if it's a suit you could wear to a wedding, funeral or other occasion, no write off.
