RobCo 16 Posted July 25, 2016 I'm looking to get a hunting rifle primarily for marksmanship. And I am curious as to what the seasoned gun owners prefer: The Winchester Model 70 or the Remington Model 700?

RichP 115 Posted July 25, 2016 For hunting, the Model 70. For marksmanship, the Model 700.
BullzeyeNJ 104 Posted July 25, 2016 700...more aftermarket options like custom stocks, bottom metal, triggers, etc. These things will help in the marksmanship dept if your fundamentals are solid.
T Bill 649 Posted July 25, 2016 My original hunting rifle is a Winchester Model 70. Not one word against it. I would look for a very good used one. Made much better back in the day.
Malice4you 627 Posted July 25, 2016 When I wanted an accurate centerfire bolt action rifle, I did some research and ended up getting the Savage 10FCP-K. Love the rifle, when I feed it properly, it is capable of way more than I am. That said, I do sometimes wish I had saved up more and gone for a Rem 700. There are so many more upgrades and parts out there for the 700 series, so if I were to become more serious with the rifle, there would be a clearer and easier upgrade path. I love all 3 of my savages, but if i were starting over again - for my paper hole punching uses - I'm not sure I would go exactly the same route again. I think I would probably have 2 savage rimgires and a rem700 centerfire if I did it all over...
Parker 213 Posted July 25, 2016 M700 for the plethora of after-market goodies. Pre-64 M70 for nostalgia and collector investment.

Based on what I've seen, I agree with BullzeyeNJ. A lot of aftermarket options out there if your'e into marksmanship or precision rifle. Makes the 700 a safe bet. But I do like the Winchester Model 70. More of a nostalgia thing though for me.
Parker 213 Posted July 26, 2016 I believe production of the Model 70's were moved to Portugal from South Carolina a few years ago, not that that's a bad thing. FN makes a quality product. I don't have a newer one but I've read they are well made. The "Rifleman's Rifle" has a long history that gets certain people defensive. Quality of New Haven guns were best in pre-war and post-war times. The 60's changed everything.
