Help - Night vision goggles or binoculars?

I’m toying with the idea of finding some way to “budget friendly” be able to see in the dark.  This wouldn’t be used in conjunction with firearms, but would be used for general observation outside around the house and when out with the Scouts.  I see one binocular unit from Sharper Image in their catalog this month, but not sure if it’s crap.  Advice?  Thoughts?  Not sure on price point / budget.

night vision and  budget doesn't align.  there was a great thread on this on ar15.com earlier this year.  I believe every bugout kit should have nv ability.

Flashlights are very budget friendly.

If you want to go thermal, and cheap, look at the Seek thermal cams for iphone and Android.  It can be used for many things.  Ever wonder where all the heat leaks out in the winter? The cold in the summer?  Ever wonder just how hot your breaker panel is?

ATN has some 4k IR nightvision scopes priced comfortably under $1,000.00.  You will have to invest in a $100-$200 IR flashlight, aka illuminator to see out farter.

FLIR has a $600 Thermal monocular that is kinda low resolution, but will do what you need it to out to 100yds.  It fits in a pocket.

Keep in mind, when considering anything that touts zoom, it is digital zoom, so the more you zoom, the more pixelated the image becomes.  These things are basically video cameras.  The higher the resolution of the detector, the better zoom will be,  you also get a wider field of view.

Its digital night vision - significantly cheaper than true NODS - at about Gen 2.5 quality.

I think you’ll see this tech be the wave of the “Night Vision” future.

It can be handheld, head worn, and weapon mounted. You can buy two and have a binocular setup giving you some depth perception and allow for some other advanced NOD techniques. Some versions even have color imaging instead of the traditional green or white phosphorus.

If looking for true NODs, spending $$ on anything less than Gen 3 is a waste. Avoid Russion surplus stuff. Save your $$ and buy something quality.  If you search, you can find a decent PVS-14 for less than a couple thousand.

Yup. There is no free lunch.

You want quality NODS - you gots to pay for them. Currently that price is a couple/few thousand bucks.

You want to go cheap - you have to deal with the corners cut.

Digital NODs have come a long way in the last few years, but they aren’t there yet - that’s why you don’t see .Mil troops or pilots using them - yet. The delay is one of the things they still need to get right.

But - that Sionyx setup is the only system that I would even consider if I trying to save some $$ and get “budget”NODs vs getting at least a Gen 3 PVS 14 (which is really the smart answer if you want useful NODs).

If I was really saving up, I’d be looking for a set of binocular white phosphorus NODS. You can get a PVS-31 or Anvis setup for $6k-$8k depending on options.

He said "budget friendly" and "general observation".   My guess, $600+ (like in your link) wouldn't fit that bill.

It would be nice if he posted an actual budge amount. Without that, we're all just guessing.

Not real budget, just exploring options.  I'm not interested in dropping a stupid amount of money.  I just thought that there might be something worth having for a few hundred.

Best bet to see in the dark for a couple hundred bucks is a quality flashlight.

NODs that are a couple hundred bucks are not with it.
