Any "pest" control specialist's in here?

Recommended Posts

traps work well, those little cheap mice traps, and also you can get a groundhog cage, pretty cheap also, set it up by his hole, the trap will close on him when he goes through it, then you can release em out in the woods..

I used to be a pest control technician a few years ago. As far as mice. Use snap traps if feasible otherwise bait stations with poisonous wax blocks. Don't use pellets. Groundhogs you can trap but are one of the most difficult animals to trap. They are not as stupid as people think. If you can. Shoot them. As far as chipmunks. The wonderful state of NJ banned this chipmunk product that is being made by Bell Enviromental. It was a poison bait but specifically targets chipmunks. Its very hard to get chipmunks to eat bait. They must have a specific diet and this forumula was specifically for them. I got the call from my supply house a week before I actually went to pick up a pail of this product. I get there and the guy said NJ made him pull it off the shelves statewide within a week. You can't get the state to respond fast to anything but if you want to kill a "cute rodent" they are there in a jiffy. A chipmunk is a rodent but apparently to cute to kill. PM me and I'll give you the names of specific name of products you can buy over the counter that work well for rodents.

Urban Grunt is right. Cantaloupe works. You can also try to "guide" the groundhog into the trap by placing a "wall" of 2x4 standing on edge to the opening of a trap from the hole. I have used canned sweet corn, canned green beans, an apple cut in quarters. Also carrots work. Whatever you do. If you catch one. Bring it FAR away as you can.Do it discreetly when you release it. Illegal in NJ to release an animal not on your property. I know. Stupid law. I had permission at one time to dump racoons, skunks, and squirrels at a cemetary but the they said "PLEASE NO GROUNDHOGS". Groundhogs are the worst. They destroy landscapes and foundations on houses. There are "other" methods to get rid of trapped groundhogs so use your imagination. Groundhogs are the devils!!! Very aggressive and they smell horrible when they deficate.

Funny I ran into this thread as I was just thinking about this today.

A few months ago, some little critter pushed the gravel out from one of the corners of the shed in my backyard and decided to make a little home for itself under the shed. Because of the position of the opening, it's almost impossible to see inside and I could never tell if something was inside to try and seal the hole back up, and since I didn't want something to die in there and stink up the shed, I pretty much ignored it. Eventually saw a rabbit going in and out of there, and with all the snow and rain we got this winter, I felt bad for the little guy and continued to ignore it.

Last week, the wife-to-be tells me she saw a skunk crawl into the hole. Fan-freakin-tastic. Just what we need. Figured the skunk scared the rabbit away. But have yet to actually see it. Was out back in the early evening today, and what do I see? What appears to be a possum. It's like a freakin zoo in my back yard! I make some noise and the f*cker crawls into the hole and goes under the shed. Go out a couple hours later when it's dark, and I see it walking across my lawn, so I light it up with an 80 lumen Surefire and he just sits there and looks at me for a minute and then scampers off back into the hole.

I was ok with the rabbit, but the skunk and possum are just annoying me now. Are slingshots a no no in NJ?

I have trapped about 5 groundhogs in the past 3 years or so. They seem to take a long time to get into the trap. I have been releasing them in a nearby park. Just found out about 2 weeks ago that was a no no. Silly law, try to be humane and you can get into trouble.

They are a nasty freakin thing.

Lately it seems that the chipmunks are running rampant...I keep seeing holes pop up. There is a trick I have been using involving a 5 gal bucket, sunflower seeds & water.

The mice are making nests in everything....my BBQ's that are covered, my outdoor furniture (also covered) my ride on lawn mower, my firewood stack etc etc.

And to make matters worse...my neighbor has several cats that come on my lawn to piss & shit. I wouldnt mind so much if they at least got rid of the all these pests.

I didnt remember seeing this much activity when my dog was around.
