theRU 33 Posted May 13, 2010 Can't wait to get to work on it and get all the cosmo off! Its an izzy from 1939 but looks to be in pretty good condition. Any idea if the ones from '39 were built with the same urgency as other rifles built during the war??? Hopefully I did well with picking this one out, my thanks to All on this board for your hints and tips. Special thanks to USNMARS and his guide. I cannot get out of work fast enough!!! Come up to Cherry Ridge this weekend. You can shoot your Mosin as well as a bunch of others, mine included. I'm planning on refinishing the stock on mine. I'm going to start it in a few weeks after I get back from a Work trip.

Malsua 1,422 Posted May 13, 2010 Hey thanks, when are you heading up there? As troy pointed out. The NJGF monthly event at Cherry Ridge. Should be a good number of folks and lots of guns to shoot. Bit of a hike from East Brunswick, but it's all day so it's not like you'll not get to shoot a lot.
theRU 33 Posted May 13, 2010 Is this a prewar stock? I saw an image on a website listing the different stock types and this seems to look prewar. they list this as prewar and this as war production the only difference i can pick out between those images is the type of fitting they have in the stock for the slings. anybody know better? theRU 33 Posted May 13, 2010 http://7.62x54r.net/ Everything you ever might want to know about the M/N series of rifles. yea thats where i got those images of the different stocks, however they dont really explain in detail how to tell which stock was used, they all look awfully similar. Maksim 1,504 Posted May 13, 2010 yes... looks like pre war furniture. Is there a square with a slash through it on the stock or receiver? Does it look counterbored?
theRU 33 Posted May 13, 2010 havent noticed that marking, ill take a closer look. I just picked it up last night, but i'll check when i get home. What would that mean? Does not look counterbored, and has matching stamps on bolt, receiver, butt plate, and magazine. Do all counter bored look like on the left of this image? Because mine does not look like that. theRU 33 Posted May 13, 2010 Maksim, What would the square and slash signify?
djg0770 481 Posted May 13, 2010 Maksim,What would the square and slash signify? Really?? Scroll down until you see the square and slash, row 28, column B http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinMarks01.htm Rutgers needs a course in how to use the web. theRU 33 Posted May 13, 2010 i meant it in terms of if its considered a bad thing that its refurbed or not.
autoxnyc 4 Posted May 13, 2010 i meant it in terms of if its considered a bad thing that its refurbed or not. I don't think so. Arsenal refinished ones usually are in much better shape. I don't think original ones will be worth a lot more. Only the Dragoon era ones are worth more. Laminated stock and hex receivers are also more rare. As long as it has a good bore and the headspace is with in spec it'll be fine. The most expensive and collectable ones are probably the real snipers. Most of them are Arsenal refinished as well. I got one of those from Rguns and it shoots really well but dosen't look that pretty.
maideneddie 35 Posted May 14, 2010 Congrats on the 1st Mosin purchase. You will absolutely love that rifle. Have fun with it
Blcklightning 11 Posted May 14, 2010 Good looking Mosin. Where did u get it from? From the tags and the black bag it's laying on it looks like you got it from Sarco...? That's where I got mine. Good luck cleaning it off. Cleaning and refinishing milsurp guns is as fun as shooting them. Good job. :handgestures-thumbup:
theRU 33 Posted May 14, 2010 Yea i got it from sarco, started working on it yesterday. All thats left for me is to get the rest of the cosmo off the stock. I'm going to try to get a steamer today. Again, i'm a noob since this is my first gun, but the barrel looks good, i think the grooves look pretty strong. my ammo should be here today, cant wait to go shoot this thing. Good luck and let me know if your gonna bring it to Dix, i'll bring mine as well.. i love that thing.. When you use brake cleaner, the cosmo and varnish melt away in front of your eyes. Of course the varnish stains your hands for a solid week, but that just shows you've done some honest work. Be sure to use the non-chlorinated brake cleaner (green bottle). You will probably want to put stain or clear coat after that though. The wood looks pretty raw when you're done.
