Tuckerton stabbing suspect held on $1M bail

(12/7/10) TUCKERTON — One man is dead and another in custody following a stabbing that also left the suspect's mother hospitalized. He has been charged with murder, attempted murder and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, authorities said. [More...]

TUCKERTON — Michael Cahill appeared this afternoon before Superior Court Judge Stephanie M. Wauters, who advised him he is charged with attempted murder of his mother, Meredith Cahill, 65, the murder of her companion, Kenneth Robinson, 63, and possession of a knife for an unlawful purpose.

Wauters read the charges to Cahill, telling him he is charged with inflicting multiple stab wounds to the torsos of both victims.

The stabbings took place Tuesday night at the home of Meredith Cahill and Robinson at 230 Wood St. in Tuckerton, authorities said.

Wauters modified Cahill's bail to require the entire $1 million to be posted in cash in order to secure his release from the Ocean County Jail. She said she based that decision on the danger Cahill poses to others and himself, the nature of the crimes he is accused of and the likeliness he will be convicted of them.

Cahill, 41, began to mutter something in court, but Deputy Public Defender Frank Gonzalez advised him to remain silent, and told the judge, "He appears to understand the charges."

Gonzalez said the Public Defender's Office will be representing Cahill.

Upon the request of Chief Assistant Ocean County Prosecutor William J. Heisler, Wauters ordered Cahill to have no contact with his mother, should he be able to post bail.

"She is in the hospital, she's ill, she's in very serious condition," Wauters told the defendant. "You are to have no contact with her. Do you understand?"

Cahill, appearing thin in a red jail uniform reserved for high-bail inmates, nodded and responded, "Yes, I do understand."

Meredith Cahill was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune Tuesday night.Authorities said she was in critical condition.

2003 verdict: Not guilty by reason of insanity

In November 2003, Michael Cahill was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the accidental fatal shooting of a Little Egg Harbor woman.

Superior Court Judge Edward J. Turnbach cleared Cahill of aggravated assault on Eric Howey and criminal trespass at the Howey home on Giffordtown Lane in Little Egg Harbor, but Cahill was to be committed to a psychiatric hospital.

(2 of 2)

About 5 a.m. Sept. 28, 2002, Cahill, delusional, wandered into the Howey home, saying he had been poisoned and needed help. He did not know the family.

Turnbach said Cahill did not know the nature and quality of his acts when he intruded and assaulted Howey, nor did he know that what he was doing was wrong.

Howey, then 31, went to his bedroom and retrieved a handgun that went off during a subsequent scuffle. Cahill suffered two gunshot wounds, and Howey's 63-year-old mother, Eileen, was fatally wounded by a stray bullet when she got out of bed and walked into a hallway.

Howey was not charged in the matter.

After Eric Howey agreed to call an ambulance, Cahill became agitated, police officers testified. When Howey returned to the living room after retrieving the gun, Cahill slammed him against a wall, breaking a mirror, and then threw him to the ground and began trying to choke him, according to testimony in the bench trial before Turnbach.

Patrolman Todd Jillson said by the time he responded to the house, Howey told him, "I shot him twice. I didn't want to do it. He made me do it."

Police later realized Eileen Howey had also been shot.

Jillson and Sgt. Richard Arose officers described bizarre behavior by Cahill.

Prior to entering the Howey home, Cahill was acting strangely at the Tuckerton home of his mother, claiming to have been poisoned. That prompted her to call an ambulance, according to Arose.

Cahill left his mother's house before the ambulance arrived and went knocking on doors seeking help before wandering into the Howeys' unlocked home down the road, Arose said.

Young called one witness, a psychiatrist who testified

Dr. Daniel Paul Greenfield, a psychiatrist for the defense, said Michael Cahill was suffering "full-blown psychosis" when he entered the Howey home. Greenfield testified he believed the psychosis was triggered by phencylidine — the illegal drug PCP — which was found in Cahill's system when he was taken to Atlantic City Medical Center for treatment of the gunshot wounds.

But Greenfield noted that anything could have triggered psychosis in Cahill, who had been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for treatment of psychotic-type disorders since age 5.

Meredith Cahill said after the trial that she believed an acquaintance of her son gave him PCP, telling him it was cold medication.

In the Little Egg Harbor case, Cahill was charged with felony murder, aggravated assault and burglary, but the court amended the charges to aggravated assault and criminal trespass because an investigation concluded that Cahill did not have a criminal purpose when he entered the Howey home.

Cahill waived his right to a jury trial and instead have a judge hear the testimony and render a verdict.

Hell yea!!! At least someone is doing something right......I just hope the guy doesn't have anything near that. Seems like he has a hard road ahead of him. It really is a shame for the family though...

I had to read the article twice to understand it.

Makes you think that Cahill shot a gun. No. He was shot by another man acting in self-defense and a stray bullet killed a bystander. Why wasn't this nut in a psychiatric prison/facility?

Because the courts cut them loose. You would not believe the nuts walking the streets. Gangbangers with firearm convictions do 1 year at most!

Two weeks ago the news reported some flea bag wondered away from a halfway house after only serving 4 years for getting drunk and shooting and killing someone. In NJ, your better off comitting murder than growing weed.

Yeah, but the guy probably _IS_ insane and should be locked in a violent psych ward for the rest of his natural days.

Problem is that Psych isnt Life in this state...if they deem him "Better" he walks....JUST LIKE HE DID BEFORE.
