7.62x39mm ammo for HD and zombies

What ammo do the AK guys use if it's a life or death situation? I'm just curious since I'm new to the caliber and the platform and don't know squat about the either.

I use whatever is in my stock - FMJ, HP, SP.

 

I have shot all three with a couple brand of different ammo and haven't had any problems with anything.

 

Barnaul, Wolf, Tula, Uly, etc - it all shoots great. It's an AK, you shouldn't have any problems.

Whatever's cheapest seems to run the best in AK's. lol. I've used nothing but Uly steel cased with no problems.

By far the most accurate is the Yugo M67 surplus made by Privi. It will outshoot any other x39 ammo on the market. Aim has it in stock

Spam cans of Yugo 7.62x39 or lots of Brown Bear JHPs work good for zombies.

 

If you want something for a first magazine to make a really good first impression in an HD situation, check out Hornady's V-Max 7.62x39. I mean you really can't go wrong with fist sized holes in a wet phone book.

Thanks Pete, that's what I was thinking. I have some Yugo corrosive stuff but I guess I run the steel cased stuff for defensive uses.

Cheapest, dirtiest, steel-cased ammo you can find. Just don't use anything corrosive.

do you live on several acres? when you say "HD" are you talking about massive civil unrest with the intention of shooting hordes of attacking rioters? if not I would be pretty careful.. fairly decent round that goes THOUGH things like car doors.. so I am pretty sure it can pretty easily punch through things like drywall...

 

besides that.. I find the average steel cased Russian stuff to run just fine.. and would not hesitate to bet my life on it..

As Vlad said, I would trust my life and any life-threatening situation with regular Barnaul or Wolf or milsurp or whatever it is. I don't need any over priced special 'self defense' ammo.

If I were to use my SKS for HD, I would use the double-tap ammo. Personally, I'm content with pistols for HD purposes, with a few loaded long arms in the safe to hold my own against a roving gang of mutant zombie bikers. In the event of an MZB attack I would just use my Yugo surplus.

Anything will do but I'd go with DevAdvocate and stick with non-corrosive stuff. I don't know if there's frangible ammo for that round but it might not be a bad idea to look into for HD. I have a couple of mags of frangible for my saiga 308...but it's 3rd on my go-to list. The first being the 45 carbine, then the saiga shotgun, and if the zombie horde is getting out of hand, the 308.
