malice95 3 Posted March 25, 2013 So I called my local PD.. they have everything back and expect to wrap up my FID and 2 permits this week. So first thing I gotta buy is a good gun safe. I need something that can hold 2 full size handguns, 1k rounds of 45 acp ammo, 1k rounds of 9mm ammo, 8 clips, and some basic documents.. Passports, birth certificates, etc. I want something fire rated for an hour or two and all steel construction An electronic lock would be ideal but not 100% necessary, I want something you'd have to drill/use a blow torch to get into. It will be located in my basement. Ideally bolted to the floor. I was looking at the larger ones but I dont think I will buy a rifle or shotgun. Probably going to stick with handguns. Nice quality without breaking the bank. What do you guys recommend? Brands? Places to buy them? Thanks, Mike

ogfarmer 138 Posted March 26, 2013 go bigger because you will add to it, believe me!!!!!!!!!!! maybe not adding more guns but other stuff. You will regret not buying a bigger one I bought a 12 from dicks black friday and it doesnt give much room for things also use the search feature cause theres been many topics lately regarding safes
mcbethr 42 Posted March 26, 2013 Welcome to the forum. If you are married, your wife will soon take up 1/2 of the safe with her jewelry and maybe even her own guns one day. Keep that in mind when shopping.
AlexTheSane 236 Posted March 26, 2013 Don't plan around what you plan to buy. I bought the bighorn safe from Costco thinking I would store ammo, valuables, one shotgun and one handgun. Three shotguns, three rifles and two handguns later, most of my ammo is in dry boxes on top of the safe.
hd2000fxdl 422 Posted March 26, 2013 Go big, as others have said, you will thank us in the long run.
AlDente67 563 Posted March 26, 2013 Cheyenne has a few smaller units for sale that will fit some pistols. But several thousand rounds added in will not fit. I too would recommend the tall cabinet just for overall capacity, but you won't get the fire-proofing for less than $500 at Dicks. The cheaper ones would suffice, except that that are more or less just regular filing cabinets with a key lock.
twong11219 0 Posted March 26, 2013 As everyone else has recommended, get bigger than what you are anticipating. Once you have a safe, then you start looking around the house for what you want to put in there. I had a half height Browning safe perfect for handguns, but in the end, I only had one shelf dedicated for them as all the other shelves because jewelry, documents and other important or expensive items. I then purchased a long gun safe. 10g capacity. The left if filled with rifles and shotgun. The right is stacked with ammo and mags. Now I wonder if I should've bought the 24+ capacity. Consider this, 1) how often do you plan on hauling a safe from the store to the basement? 2) How many times do you want to buy a safe? 3) What else would you put in there if you had a safe? I went to Dick's on B-Friday. Got a 10g safe for $299. It's not luxurious like some nicer brands, but it's not a cabinet and gets the job done. Also, I was able to haul it to the basement by myself. Not easily, but doable. My friend got a 24g safe, I believe, from Costco. Check them out. Price was real good and curbside delivery. That was a beast to move. Going bigger once is cheaper than buying twice.
